Many see YouTube as a better alternative to social media as it can be more productive. But it is still very addictive. 40 hours over the past week and that's considered low. Across 66 sessions. I realized that it was the same dopamine limbo that got me hooked on porn. It's not a productive use of time, really you should only be on YouTube for 2 hours a day or less. Any more than that, you succumb to doomscrolling trash and never absorb any information.

I guess it also depends on the type of content you watch. There are really good educational video/tutorials.
But I agree, too much isn't good. Especially the youtube shorts.

Watch maybe 10 minutes of educational content, then you're down the rabbit hole of junk videos. No longer entertainment since everything is now "content".

Beating porn addiction is like winning against hadest part of life . I assume that we are watching YouTube beacuse we are alone or we have no place to go. Everthing could be considered bad in that scenario excluding Gaming, smoking or faping. In order to dealing with YouTube is needed some social life which is difficult nowadays thus we got problem. I spend more time on YouTube than I should but I take it for music or watching math films and 4% of it are some dumb films. If I were to chose of course any thing related to new technology is good for us like wearing Phone in pocket next to ours.. Or speaking with Phone next to ear.

I have a Smartphone because I need it to make photos, ecc...(My main phone is still a Cat B35). One of the ways that could help you is delete the app from your Smartphone at least, had the same Issue and I'm sure this is the best way. You can actually still enter in Youtube from the browser. Another solution I've found is to install Mozilla Focus or other browsers that delete your chronolgy when you close the app, so everytime you have to log-in and it's boring. As I've deleted it now I use youtube only from computer browser and it's kinda boring honestly, It's actually a bad weapon, and it can turn against you, just like all these ''fake lights'' like Porn, videogames ecc...you think you are in control and that they are good and then the light blinds you.

I feel like Youtube changed something in their algorithm, I get so many "good" recommendations that I see myself using YouTube more and more, up to the point of me realizing this... It annoys me. It is educational in a way (I watch philosophy videos), but it's too much information. There's no way to process all of that, so it's wasted anyways. I'm trying to cut it short as well.
I think it also depletes your dopamine, don't waste that stuff on videos online.

  7. I think it depends on what you watch. Not everything needs to be educational or valuable, sometimes entertainment is just that. There is a lot of genuine trash on the site though.

  8. I have the same experience with YouTube, which I'm sure isn't mystery as the app/site is designed to grab and keep our attention.

If you have a smartphone, either in the settings or using an app, you can install a screen time option to allot yourself some time each day for YouTube.

Maybe try a 90 day NoTube challenge?

That could work. Might do that once the holidays start. Do a binge on self-improvement videos beforehand, then cold turkey with blockers for about a month or so. That way I can absorb and apply the things I learn on YouTube into my life more efficiently without overdoing screentime with junk content.

But when does education become edutainment? It's like the "I LOVE SCIENCE" crowd, who don't actually care about pursuing truth and just want to be cool and special.

YouTube's algorithm can be either the best creation in existence on some days or the worst piece of technology ever designed the other 90% of the time. So much good stuff just sitting there for free. You can get an Oxford University English education all online, with a full list of books and course descriptors. Basically cheating at life. Too much info makes it invalid and another form of dopamine rush.

  12. I don't personally use YouTube to educate, so I can't say. I mainly watch gaming videos in a separate window while working.

I like to disassociate while watching PS2 long-play videos because I get a synaesthetic feeling that I'm the one in control. A controller to me feels like an additional limb, wholely second nature. I can physically feel myself putting in the inputs even when I am not in control.

  14. I can't tell if this is based or not lmao. I like Oneyplays.

I can watch the entirety of Shrek scene-by-scene within my own mind. I have watched it hundreds of times. All in full detail. There comes a point where if you do something enough you will eventually replicate it in its entirety. Can't watch the film anymore because I already know every minute detail.

YouTube is the only “social media” I use. It’s my primary form of entertainment too. I use it for music also. I spend at least 5 hours a day on it and maybe 8 hours or more on the weekends.

No offense, but that sounds like way too much. No analog hobbies that you could do instead?
