The challenge is ok I guess. But for the points to be motivating they need to mean something. And for them to mean something there needs to be both danger of losing a significant amount of them and, once gathered enough of them, a clearly defined reward to be exchanged for them; if the reward is not clearly defined then it's not motivating to strive for.
@Ūruz I thought it would be exciting like a game. I tried to base it on a game. However, you block your rewards until you reach some condition - it's like punishing yourself for being addicted or failing. That's negative reinforcement. But when it comes to games, they rely on positive reinforcement. I guess there's more to motivation than setting yourself a goal and a reward. I guess I'll have to read a book on that.
I'm not a game designer, so I have no idea. But I am a gamer, and I know people love achieving goals! And there needs to be effort too, so it's not like video games do not punish you; in Souls games you drop the souls when you die, and you keep dying over and over again. But then when you beat the boss it's rewarding—being kicked in the groin over and over, and over again is negative reinforcement of sorts, isn't it? Or maybe it's not and I just don't know what that term stands for? I don't know. But anyhow, I think there should be some negative, I just think positive should outweigh negative, that's all, but negative should still feel somewhat punishing—games that give you everything for free are not fun. But games that are too punishing are not fun either, so it's a balancing act I guess.
But why are games so addictive? And healthy life isn't? In both area we set goals. Both pursuing game goals is more appealing. Why? Because there is a score? Or there is instant gratification and in life not always? In games we keep the score. In life we don't. Is this the problem with life that we don't reward ourselves? If I managed to break it down, I could use the game logic in life to my advantage.
That's a good question! I don't know. I'm not convinced it has that much to do with keeping score though. Or maybe it has? But I think you are onto something bout about instant gratification; games have constant dopamine hits, they are spaced out very frequently. While in life it takes weeks, months, and sometimes years, until we get that reward! I loosely remember Andrew Huberman talking about how to leverage dopamine for motivation on his podcast, albeit I forget which episode. But I guess video game developers have these tricks mastered.
How about an inner challenge? A two-day challenge? Choose your boss to defeat. For me it's a two-day nofap hard mode streak. I need start small. Are you up for it?
