You get "brain fog" too?!

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself.
I'm a 27 year old male, a chemist, living in California.
I've been trying to quit porn and masturbation ever since I started when I was 12 or so. I never thought the habit would last this long, or that it would still be a problem when I had a girlfriend and a loving relationship.
I have kept my addiction secret from pretty much everyone in my life, including my SO. Then she said something in passing that really made me see things clearly: "...then there's porn, but you're not enough of a [terrible person] to watch that"

Since that, I've seriously tried to quit porn and masturbation, but I have failed thus far. During the few times where I've gone more than five or so days, however, I noticed my brain changing. Some kind of "fog" seemed to be lifted, and I could think better, work better, and have more self-discipline. I suspected it had something to do with abstaining from destructive sex acts, but I had no idea that this was a documented effect.
So that's why I'm here. Even though I never really was much of a fan of PMO quitting sites, I recognized so many familiar problems in the info section of this website that I was encouraged to join a community with which I already have much in common.

Now, I'll be honest: 90 days is impossible at this point, hope I can build up to it.

Hey man! I'm new here as well, I'm on day one. I know what you mean about a fog being lifted. Don't let yourself get bored, and when you do, get up and do something else. Constantly fixing your boredom with something else will start to heal your brain. Ninety days is NOT impossible! Take it one day at a time. We'll be a day or so apart! My goal is 100 days, but I want to be free from PM forever.

I put a P blocker on my computer called K9 web protection. It's free, and it works really well. I had it for awhile, but whenever I felt the urge, I could use the admin password and change the settings to allow porn. Just yesterday I said heck, might as well do this, and I changed the password to a random passcode that I don't know. Now I'm pretty devious and I'm sure I could find a way around it, but I highly recommend doing something like it. Just make sure that sites you need to be able to access can be accessed before locking yourself out. :)

Hey there, let's do it. I've been using Cold turkey for a while to avoid time wasting websites at work, it's been working ok. I know that if I disable it once I will never again respect it, so I've been treating it as almost sacred.
Then, again, I haven't added a porn-specific blocker, thinking "What if someone sees it and knows of my addiction"?
How do you deal with that?

I want to welcome you to the forum and wish you the best of luck in getting off the porn cycle. I will be following your progress and help out where I can with your questions.

But something in your post seemed a bit, well euh, questionable? It seems to me that sentence suggests that all people who watch porn are terrible human beings. That sounds a bit harsh?

Hey! Yeah I tried to do the same thing, but eventually I gave up and started using the admin password. K9 isn't porn specific either, it will block just about any category that you want. They categorize the entire web pretty much, and then you just pick what you need blocked. I also have it set up to force the safe search setting on google, so that I can't look at unsafe pictures through there.

As for "What if someone sees it and knows of my addiction, how do you deal with that?"

First of all, one person knows me personally, and knows of my problem. I told my pastor. It was very embarrassing, but I felt worlds better, and he encouraged me in the Word. Secondly, I feel like I need to start being honest. If someone sees it, or figures out that I have a problem, I (hope) to say, "Yes. Yes, I do have an issue, and I'm doing everything I can to be open about it." I don't mean have a sticker on your back that says, "I'm addicted to PMO," but be transparent about it. I find that it is easier to let go when I tell someone.

Granted, I am on my second day. :) Here's to freedom!

Welcome to NoFap where, as you have seen, you are amongst friends who are here to encourage you and not judge you.

What are your current strategies for combating the enemy called PMO?

Im sorry if thats how it came across. I dont think she meant to categorize someone as a terrible person solely due to a single act. Rather, i believe she meant watching porn is a terrible thing to do. To me, however, that sentence meant that I had breached her trust in me. And honestly, I too think that porn is a form of cheating.

As for current strategies, well, ill just try to get busy, and browse here if i have an urge.
Ill probably install some discrete internet monitoring program as well.

    Best things that helped me:
    1) install blocker on laptop
    2) install blocker on phone
    3) delete all applications that have associations with porn (kik, skype, snapchat etc etc)
    4) delete all accounts that have associations with porn (dating websites, porn websites, "special" email adresses etc etc)
    5) delete your entire porn collection (yes even that backup on that usb)
    6) temporarily stop all contact with people you associate with sexting/porn
    7) identify the places you used for pmo and avoid them at the times of the day you used to do pmo
    8) start learning that every time you start fantasising or start getting horny to immediately get up and do something else, don't even think about it, get up and do something

    All the best of luck!
