We have been told about addictions all of our lives.
This video is primarily about drugs, but he includes pornography as one of our addiction. He proposes a different pathway, the Portuguese pathway to cure addiction.

Do you think this would work for you?

The opposite of addiction is freedom.

Did you watch the video to the end.
It is much more than freedom.
Freedom can leave us in a loop.

I didn't see that part, great video, everyone here should watch it.

But there are several experiments that are missing from the talk, and he fills them in with his conclusions, which may not be right.

What happens if you take the rats from the first experiment and placed them in rat park? What happens then? Are they still addicted to the cocaine or are they able to give it up?

What is the rate of addiction in Portugal compared to other European countries, and to non-European countries? If the rate is the same or higher, then that is an issue.

He also misses the point that an "intervention" is not to shame the person, it's done when the person does not know that they have an addiction, when she/he is in denial.

So it's not clear that the opposite of addiction is connection. It may be freedom, or some combination of freedom and connection.

"Connection" is probably a bit simplistic. Years ago, I knew a professor of psychology, psychologist, who had done a study on cats in cages and vodka laced milk. As long as they received the treat for doing the right thing, and the shock for doing the wrong thing, they avoided the vodka laced milk. When they started getting random rewards or shocks, they began choosing the vodka. They could be reconditioned to pure milk be a return to proper rewards and punishments. This was from before the mid 70's. I think there is something about making sense out of life that keeps us from needing to escape from it.

What do you mean about doing the right thing and doing the wrong thing? They were being trained to do something else which you didn't mention? Or drinking the milk was the right thing?

I do not remember the details, but yes, they were being trained. I think that maybe it was the color of a light that indicated which button they had to press. After they were trained, the reward system went random. The pure milk and the vodka laced milk were available to the cat to drink whenever the cat was thirsty. The cat became addicted to the alcohol, until it was reconditioned. They did not remove the vodka and put the cat on the wagon.
