"Politicians use statistics in the same way that a drunk uses lamp-posts—for support rather than illumination."-Andrew Lang

This doesn't have to apply to politics alone, but the point is someone may just go for social support without understanding. It doesn't matter how many people support you if you don't have the understanding it's not going to work in the end, right? Maybe it'll prop you up, but that also means you're dependent on your support.

Not to be preachy because I really respect people to their own religion/spirituality or lack of it, but it's interesting this also relates to the two parts of the Eight Fold path in Buddhism which are understanding and intention - classically categorized under wisdom. (the other 6 are categorized under ethics and mental discipline) Support is like having good intention but it will only go so far, illumination of course corresponds to understanding.

Besides, I think with support we need to play an active role, it's not just about getting it all the time - that's that consumerist mindset that is actually very much like addiction. And hey by the way, given it's the holidays we can probably observe some of that in peoples shopping - just saying since it's always ... illuminating to observe these human behaviors shows up in different ways.
