Responsible porn use? New York Times and a new approach to teaching teens about porn

Discussion in 'Porn Addiction' started by thorswrath32, Feb 17, 2018.

  1. Hi guys

I follow FTND (Fight The New Drug) and they often have interesting articles about the danger of porn and this one struck me as being quite significant, please have a read and comment below on what you think.

Another really good link which is sign posted on the article is this one from your brain on porn.

I think some form of 'porn/media literacy' to coincide with sex education is long overdue but it's interesting to note that FTND have identified the New York Times piece as being thin on the ground when it comes to the psychological harm, escalation, addictive patterns etc.

I talk about this a lot with my SO. Sex positivity snd the culture surrounding porn is almost treated like a human right. Its so laughable that the ability to use something is put ahead of education and health concerns which could actually help people be happier.

  3. I read the NYT's article that you mentioned and thought talking about it with you guys. It's a piece of garbage that completely misses the point.

I would highly recommend NOT to read it. There are very graphic depictions and it is full of triggers. It is in the trend of normalization of pron although they say it has a harmful effect. They do not talk about addiction, they do not talk about the relationships and literally lives that are destroyed by this garbage. What the article preaches is not a porn ban or sex education for teenagers. What they preach is, litterally, and I am not kidding, porn education. How messed up is that???

After I read it I had to fight for a good 48 hours on whether or not to relapse. I almost lost faith in the NoFap way of life. Until I read the comments. It warmed my heart to see that most people who commented critized the article and critized porn. People know it's fucked up!

  4. The article starts out promising by engaging the teenagers in debate and putting things into perspective, ie getting them to actually question what they have seen as opposed to just take it at face value, but as it goes on we get to the female porn producers view that teens should have an appropriate list of good (porn) sites to visit. I mean what the actual F##k! i get that teens are going to watch porn, heck i was watching BDSM when i was 17-18 but the thing was i didn't have any one to talk to about it because porn was shrouded in shame and secrecy. I see what FTND are saying about the lack of education on the severe consequences for many people who end up with an addiction or for those who's habit has destroyed their family and relationships.

I agree that educating people about porn is important, but i think its crucial to include the voices of those who's lives have been turned upside down due to the poor choices they made or the things that have happened to them as a result of being exposed to porn or the industry.

If it's not carefully thought out then we are just going to end up with porn stars educating teenagers and we will start to see situations where a 15 year old goes up to their careers advisor and asks how they get into the porn business.

I feel the same about it m8. Do not read that, it is a total bullshit. It's like the authors themselves are addicted and their "porn addicted brain" does everything to justify porn use.
