Hi. Do you think it's possible for teens to abstain from masturbation for a whole 90 day reboot, or even entirely?
Or would raging hormones be to much and make it nearly impossible?

  2. yes, it's possible. No need to blame the hormones... Urges aren't physical, no matter the argument.

It is much harder the older someone gets to quit pmo cause they had the addiction much longer but for a teenager they may not have the wisdom to do so.

  4. There's no way I would have been able to quit at any point during my teens for more than 30 minutes. I had boners all the time and checked out every girl that moved. I don't even think about sex until I have porn right in front of my face nowadays. I obviously think I would be better off now if I quit earlier, but don't think it is realistic to have quit as a teenager. To be honest, it didn't become a real problem until my mid-twenties. There can be extreme cases, but for the most part I wouldn't worry too much about it as a teen. I would only say, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to quit.

Anything is possible. The question is: is it feasible? Are you addicted to porn or compulsive masturbation? Do you experience your POM-behavior as problematic? As a teenager I had a much bigger sex drive than at my current age (37). This is not uncommon and doesn't need to be a problem.

In my case I did have a problem as a teenager: I sometimes masturbated as much as 20 times a day to cope with stress studying exams. I did not seek help for that at the time, which I'd better done. Just abstaining from it wouldn't have solved the core issue though: fear of failure and inability to cope with stress.

I disagree here with @bken that urges are not physical, because... they are: we are born with the physical urge to reproduce and this is steered by hormones and biochemical processes in the brain. There's no point in denying human biology or trying to fight it, especially when you're a normal healthy teenager.

So again, do you suffer from real addiction and/or compulsive behavior that interferes with your daily life? If so, go talk about it with a professional and work out a plan. If not: be young and allow yourself to have fun.

  7. If you don't think urges should be controlled and fought, what's the point of abstinence in the first place and then why are you here?

The evolved part of the human brain called the prefrontal cortex is highly involved in resisting impulses and self control. It's basically what makes nofap and abstaining from masturbation possible. Urges are definitely not physical. If they were there would be no need for a prefrontal cortex. Biological and physical mechanisms are what's used to express urges or sexuality. If they were in fact physical, no one would be able to overcome pmo addiction or any addiction for that matter. Hypofrontality and difficulty resisting temptation is what makes urges hard to deal with. Urges rely on an underlying mechanism that is highly dependent on the individual's mindset, no matter the age. An urge cannot exist if the person is not consciously or subconsciously open to the thought of pursuing sex or masturbation. Yes this takes a lot of self control but can be done. And it proves that urges can be overcome. If you want to blame the hormones that's just fine, but even then there's always a choice. Teens too can choose to say no.

I don't want to dive too much into a discussion because it would lead us too far. But sure, 'physical' was bad choice of wording. Let me rephrase that to 'biological urge'. Something programmed into our genes (that can be steered to some extent, yes).

    Anyway.

My main concern in this thread is that we're talking about a 14-year old. Does he have an addiction? Is his porn/masturbation behavior actually problematic? And if he thinks it is, is it really, looked at from a normal adult perspective?

Is it possible for teens to abstain from PMO? Probably. But should he? I don't think so, unless there's a real problem. And if that's the case I definitely would recommend him getting professional advice first. Instead of him relying on a forum where everyone obviously will recommend abstention from PMO because we're a biased group of people.

I want to be that other voice. Because even though I myself have a problem, that doesn't mean every random stranger here does, especially when he/she is a teen.
