I am going to adopt a lifestyle of "ignorance is bliss". The news is all doom-and-gloom these days.

I want to adopt a lifestyle of "ignorance is bliss". The news is fucked. Climate change, Donald Trump, Brexit, Artificial Intelligence, China as a "superpower", Muslims, and Africans are all apparantely going to destroy the world. Fuck the media is making me so neurotic man.

  2. Media gives a skewed view of things. I have to pause frequently and think about my interactions with others in my everyday life. It’s nowhere close to what the media is trying to shove down our throats.

  3. Yes stay away from the media especially the news!!! I haven’t watched in a long time and I feel so much better for it.

Before the media, news consisted of information that was relevant to you or at least your community. Such as, a drought has affected the region, the local lord has risen arms against the king or the mongols are invading. everything else was pointless trivia.

  6. Too much politics and drama in the news. And gore and bad news. And celebrities, who in reality are normal people that are massive attention seekers. Avoid it if you can.

You could do that, that is a reasonable and balanced option. But there is so much to learn! Not by taking word of news as facts but by observing how people interviewed from different cultures react, how information get shared, what influences public opinion and so on. I remember many instances when i was reminded in news of some event or movement which made me research more about it. And every news organization has a polarity, based on who is financing it, local social climate and subscription base. News are not facts, ther are someones view of events. I find value in that.

It's funny you mentioned that. Last week one media outlet here ran a story about how a severe drought was affecting a particular community not far from where I grew up. It was quite an interesting story, but unfortunately not many people saw it. From what I understand, far more people wanted to change the channel and watch some overpaid idiots in Melbourne wasting perfectly good money on some renovation show. Goes to show that the media just gives people what they want.

When the next big drought comes through in 10 years time they will be reporting water restrictions and dam levels. I take it you're from NSW?

Hahah I fucking hate The Block.

The batchelor is still worse though.

It's funny how Television is one of the most powerful and greatest inventions of all time, but now only shows degenerate "reality" shows now. And that's not counting the bombardment of ads.

The media is a tool used by the elites to keep the masses outraged, fearful, and ... compulsive consumers.

Congratulations on unplugging from the Matrix.

I grew up in NSW, but now living on the Gold Coast. It seems the only time the "mainstream" media outlets pick up on drought stories is when it becomes a political issue and they can point the finger at some politician for not building a dam or whatever. When it's a human story about people trying to survive and being forced to shoot livestock they can't feed anymore, nobody seems to care.

That's true. My theory on this is that TV networks have realised most viewers aren't all that discerning, so they just fill the space as cheaply as possible and just promote the crap out of something extremely mediocre. I recall reading a quote along those lines from Rupert Murdoch himself 20 years ago. Someone told me that we can now access over 800 cable channels in this country now -- that's a lot of space to fill. Which means a lot of crappy television.

Bringing it back the original topic at hand, I suppose the people reporting on "news" need to do something to make their broadcasts stand out, hence the fear factor they try to pump into it. The thing these broadcasters are most frightened of in the world is the prospect that someone might change the channel and watch something else, so the fear is a way to keep people glued to the screen. There's a conversation between Ryan Holliday and Julien Blanc on youtube (I'll link it below) that's very interesting. One of the things they discuss is how the viewers or the readers of the media are not the consumers of the media. In fact, they are the product and they are being sold to the real consumers -- the advertisers.

So keep that in mind when it comes to the media. I don't watch the "news" or read newspapers and haven't done so for years. Generally if something major happens (like an incel going on another shooting spree) I'll hear about it anyway. I don't need to spend an hour or more glued to the television waiting for "story developments" in an incident that has already happened.

Wasn't Trump meant to start WW3? then we see him shake hands with Putin and Kim Jong-un.
Nothing has happened. The only news I watch is for sports.
The Media are a bunch of fear mongering twats.
