Hi! I'm a 29 year old male. I'm about 10 months sober. I am thankful for my 12 step program. I am getting clean. The next obstacle in cleaning up my life is a Porn-Masturbation addiction. I have noticed that abstaining from porn and masturbation yields a better ability to look people in the eye (especially women). I doubt I'll ever be able to truly engage in a meaningful relationship with a women if I continue my addiction. I have a lot of shame around objectifying half the human race. I am able to exist in my own skin a bit better when I am not engaging in porn and masturbation. I know this to be fact for me. My porn/masturbation addiction is going to be harder to break than my alcohol addiction. I drank for 7 years. I have used porn and masturbation as a coping mechanism since middle school. I have finally come to see my porn and masturbation use a a full stop addiction and coping mechanism. I have found the best part of AA are the meetings. However I feel like porn use and masturbation is even more taboo than alcoholism. I feel more shame around my PM than I did about my alcoholism. I think this might be a harder addiction for me. I started to realize a porn addiction when I began collecting rather than randomly using. That was an eye opener. Glad to be here!
Hi @acceptance_serenity, good to see you here! I can relate to the feelings of shame that you mention with PMO. It's mostly a very helpful community around here, and I hope that the forums can help you as much as AA did.
