Emery artwork - might contain triggers

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Deleted Account, Oct 8, 2018.

  1. For those of you don't know Emery are a Christian rock band and quite a controversial one at that. Things have got even more controversial with their album cover because it's a photograph of a naked woman from the back, with her head covered, kneeling down holding a candle in the woods. A number of conservative Christians are angry at them because they say it's pornographic and will cause men to lust, equally, those who are more liberal are angry because they say the photo makes women look weak and victims.

In their podcast, they talk about how the artwork came to be and how the different reactions tells us about how we think.

They start talking about the album cover at 11:16

This is a quote from the artist explaining the photograph:
In searching for our truth, when it comes to religion and God and what is not real we must take away physical objects that limit us from being stripped down to our true selves. When I think of that kind of questioning wondering I feel that the human body shows that vulnerability once we have been stripped of those things like clothes, jewellery or shoes. The covering of the face is the meaning of still trying to understand the questions that have been asked. The pages all over the ground are symbolic of the questions being strond about, not yet finding the answers in where you have searched, the place you have searched being the book. The candle is the light that's pushing one to all the answers of the many questions running through our heads.

Here's a preview of the album that does briefly show the artwork. It might be a trigger for some people but I for me it isn't really.

Here's a full song from the album if you're interested:

It seems most of it doesn't contain nudity but there is on a version of the Emery artwork recently posted. Personally, I think his work is very interesting.

But what do you think? Should Emery have used the artwork? Why does the human body cause us to have a strong reaction? Is it just about sex or does a naked body represent something else?

  2. The Vatican is surrounded by naked art and even commissioned it ;). I'm ok with most artists doing most things. MeWithOutYou is a much better Christian band in my opinion. Lol.

  3. Yeah, they mentioned that in the podcast.

They're pretty good. I think I heard Hayley Williams say she's friends with them. I get mixed with them The 1975 because MewithoutYou has a song called January 1979.

  4. True, but some Popes didn't approve hence the fig leaf campaign. Lets just say this art/ludeness debate has been going on for a while now, lol.
