In April 2016, Paul Simon endorsed this cover version. He sent lead vocalist David Draiman an email praising Disturbed's performance of the rendition on late-night talk show Conan. Simon wrote: “Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks.” Draiman responded, “Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/us and we are eternally grateful.”

Art Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."

I think this is true. I experience a profound sense of loneliness and a feeling of chronic emptiness. :( Yet it is so difficult to articulate, so hard to identify what I really need.

Ah, a classic that will never die.

While the song does resemble loneliness and emptiness, it has been sometime in our lives - the emotions.

I feel you @IGY. I've witnessed these emotions since I can remember.. I identify myself as a loner, and the things I need to release myself from this clutch are more surroundings and activities in order to dissipate these unwanted feelings.

I know I'm not the best at describing, but no one deserves to greet darkness(pun intended).

You are welcome. It was written and recorded before I was born by Simon & Garfunkel. This version is a folk classic!

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, "you do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence"

Ohh I knew it sounded somewhat familiar, but definitely the Disturbed version is my favorite by far, so powerful. By the way is this the origin of the meme hello darkness my old friend? lol

Oh IGY :( Emptiness and loneliness are so draining, so abrasive to the human heart. I have gone through patches of emptiness and purposelessness and when you are in them, it feels like you can't get out or escape. But there is a way out, you will find it if you persevere. These two scriptures speak for themselves, I hope they encourage you, at least a bit.

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Rom. 15:13

I like how we as people can relate to music. It lets us know that we aren't the only ones that feel the way we do. That we aren't truly alone in how we feel. Music is very powerful.

Why the hell is everybody feeling so lonely here? Let's try to shift our energies to a higher level and lift our mood. Let's find contentment and satisfaction deep within so that there is no more loneliness, there is no more desire for anything. Let's feel complete.

"Why the hell is everybody feeling so lonely here?" Well, because this is the Loneliness forum. Don't be such a bad ass!

The descriptor for this forum reads: Dealing with virginity, involuntary "hard mode" rebooting, or generally a subcommunity devoted to dealing with the loneliness involved with being celibate not-by-choice. For people who WANT to have sex and a relationship, but have had these things elude them.

Does it not make any sense to you that those who have dreadful feelings of loneliness for these reasons, need to know that others feel or have felt those same emotions? That, in itself, is a comfort and a bulwark against even greater isolation. So, do not disparage those that have empathy and are willing to express it. If you really want to be a positive force, come up with something pragmatic bad ass. Do not simply pose a question which makes everyone feel guilty for how they feel! :(

I agree with @IGY and @xyzzy - It is good to express these feelings and to process them. It is healthy.

Oh! come on man. Don't overreact. I didn't know that you were that serious and sensitive to this issue. Relax dude. I just said what I felt at that moment. I wasn't that serious. There wasn't any intention to hurt or belittle anyone. Believe me on this.
I wanted you guys to shift your focus from loneliness to something better so that we could feel charged. That's it. This forum "loneliness" is awesome. I have posted here and have received beautiful replies here which had helped me a lot at that time. So, I am not questioning the existence of this forum anyway.:)
What you and few others have commented here are true in their own ways. But, don't you think that they are the complete picture. A lot of times, we try to find justification and resonance of our own views from other people. Some people want others to sympathize with them and feel sorry for them so that they can feel good about themselves. They play the victim mindset without any valid reason to do so. Now, don't get me wrong again. I am not raising questions over your reasons for loneliness or anyone else.;) Some do have valid reasons to feel lonely. But, just focusing on what we don't have, rather than what we still have, will only prolong the healing. Let's just appreciate life when we still can. Sorry for failing to properly communicate my perspective. It's not a comment on anyone. Just my views.
