Did I Relapse?

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Eternal Fire, Nov 10, 2017.

  1. Earlier today I was googling more stuff about my desires for informational purposes. I thought I would see if there was a sub reddit where people who had similar desires shared their experiences. There appeared to be one but it asked if I was over 18 before I entered. So I said yes and started scrolling through, but I quickly picked up that this was a place for content and not advice etc. I clicked on an image attached to a post and it was something that quickly got me aroused. I stared at it for a while before exiting. Then I closed the page.

So yeah, I wasn't sure whether this was a relapse or not. It wasn't intentional but I recognised what I'd stumbled upon and chose to indulge for a little bit by just staring at the content. What do you guys think?

  2. Your tracker implies you're attempting to abstain from porn, so this is really more of a question you can answer.

From my perspective, no, you didn't relapse. However, are you sure you were just looking for information or is that something your addicted mind is telling you to give you an excuse to look at it?

I don't think you relapsed, I think you were briefly triggered, but I'd be very wary on looking for any information at all. There's really only one thing you need to know about porn.

Looking at it is a waste of time.

  3. Thanks, yeah I should be careful. I started researching about it recently, so now both times I've been aroused while searching for answers. What I searched this time was just the name of the fetish then reddit so it wasn't as specific as what I'd searched before. In future I'll probably end up trying to find out more about it anyway so I'll try to be as specific as possible.

  4. No you did not relapse. Besides, you came across the image inadvertently which happens a lot when we browse the net. Triggering images are lurking everywhere. We just need to find a way to become emotionally distant from triggers. That is easier said than done. If we do not purposely look for the images/videos then it cannot be a relapse.

Also PMO is much more of a complex ritual than we think. It involves a lot of micro and macro activities, thoughts and emotions that are together linked like a chain. In my perspective, completing the ritual means following through until orgasm. Since, you did not follow through and broke the ritual at the point of being triggered, you should consider that a major accomplishment.

  5. Thanks. Yeah that's true, triggers can pop up anywhere unexpectedly. I usually see them in movies and websites but not in real life so far. Hopefully I will get used to them and the urges will not be as intense.

I was in the exact same situation earlier and I reset my counter and counted it as a relapse. I felt the same chemical rush as I did before and felt anxious and guilty within myself knowing what I had just done. I only watched it for 2 seconds yet still feel as if I broke the rule of no pornography.

Stumbling onto something on accident isn't a relapse unless you fap to it. If we counted it as a relapse no one would make it to 90 days.

I started to masturbate slowly to pictures before that and was in the process of masturbating when watching the video. I switched it off straight away but still felt the rush of watching it.

  9. Maybe for him, that's not the point? I can see the mindset behind completely demonizing everything porn and masturbation related. Perhaps the point for those like him isn't to make it 90 days. It's just about abstaining.
