Anthony Bourdain Suicide

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Deleted Account, Jun 12, 2018.

  1. Been reading and listen about the Anthony Bourdain suicide. I’d watch his show once in awhile and envied him and his life. Paid to travel around the world, eat, and meet interesting people. Where do I sign up?!?!

Then he goes and does this act. There’s more to life than having a dream job.

One thing that’s been going on is people are speculating and pointing at the girlfriend who was seen with another man. They even post pictures of her with this guy.

Seems terribly unfair to her that the media is trying to make it look like this woman is responsible for his death. Anthony Bourdain is responsible for his death. Can’t blame anyone else and they ought to give the woman her privacy.

I was wondering what others felt about these unfortunate circumstances.

Just goes to show that true happiness isn't found in the material things. What we often think will make us happy tends to make us more miserable.

  3. It's not applicable since he suffered from depression. Having material things or having no material things can't save you from depression. You can have all you ever dreamed of but at the end of the day if you have depression it doesn't matter.

That like saying someone is responsible for dying if they get hit by a drunk driver. When you're depressed there's nothing you can do to get rid of it.

You have to ask yourself, was his depression caused by his lifestyle? Could it be possible that the life of extravagant food and travelling, money and friends made him depressed. Maybe when he tasted these things, he realized that they didn't make him happy. And if these things didn't make him happy, than he felt that nothing could.

Isn't it strange that people who tend to have amazing lives are usually the ones who end up killing themselves. While people who usually have nothing are usually extremely happy.

Lets not forget that depression in most cases is caused by the way we choose to live our lives.

  5. It is an interesting fact that many who commit suicide are pretty well off. They may not have lived in luxury but they did live comfortably. We don’t hear stories about throngs of poor killing themselves.

I do feel sorry for the girlfriend who is getting blamed by some for his suicide. She’s not to blame at all.

And I still say that Anthony Bourdain is responsible for his own death. He made the choice to do it instead of making the choice to talk to friends and family who loved and cared for him.

Suicide is something I used to contemplate for decades, since I was at least 8 years old. Last winter was really bad. I had bought charcoal with the thought of using that method. Gave it away to my neighbor after thinking properly once again.

Since seeing a therapist and getting away from religion these last few months I’ve not been thinking that way anymore.

The whole issue has fascinated me. So many try to come up with answers. Lots of people like to quickly throw out the depression explanation. But truth be told, we’ll never know the real answer to why each individual did it.

I opened the discussion mainly to hear other’s thoughts. I might not agree with you but I do like to hear them.

  6. I disagree with you but I am happy that you’ve shared your opinion.

    Thanks for your input.

  7. Waste of life.

And why wasnt the cause of death released, as in "how?". Was it a drug over dose, was it accidental? How do we really know?

  8. He hung himself with a bathrobe belt.

  9. Can you prove that?

Research suggests that continuing difficulties – long-term unemployment, living in an abusive or uncaring relationship, long-term isolation or loneliness, prolonged work stress – are more likely to cause depression than recent life stresses. However, recent events (such as losing your job) or a combination of events can ‘trigger' depression if you’re already at risk because of previous bad experiences or personal factors...

Everyone’s different and it's often a combination of factors that can contribute to developing depression. It's important to remember that you can't always identify the cause of depression or change difficult circumstances.

I understand where you're coming from because I used to think like that before I educated myself about depression. I would encourage you to read the book How Hard It Really Is by J.S. Park and you might view depression differently. It's a well-researched book written by someone who's struggled with depression. He honestly talks about times when he's just wanted to kill himself without a good reason. He's overcome a porn addiction, married to a beautiful woman and has his dream job (he's a hospital chaplain, not a job that makes him a millionaire but he finds it fulfilling), yet he's still depressed.

If you are interested in the book this month he's giving away the ebook for free. See this post on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pastorjspa...715848376426/1795087410605922/?type=3&theater

It should be said not everyone who has depression is a writer, so we can't know who's depressed. That person you think is happy might secretly be battling depressing and they might end up killing themselves and everyone who knows them would be confused because they seemed so happy. Personally I hardly let anyone know about my struggles.

There is an estimated 151,600 death every day. I think it's likely not every person in this number has an 'amazing life'. We don't hear about these deaths because if we're honest, at the end of the day, most people don't care about a 'normal' person (unless they know them personally).

This is going along of what I was advocating. Having things that we think will make us happy usually end up making us miserable. Everything you listed there is exactly what I was talking about. It seems like he's missing something, and that's something he needs to explore within himself.

All these suicides have one thing in common. And that is a lack of conviction or a good enough reason to wake up in the morning. Finding your purpose or calling in life doesn't come from what we perceive will make us happy (marriage, kids, wealth, comfort, travelling etc...). If you aren't fulfilling what you feel like you are called to do than you will not find any valid reason to keep on living.

Exactly. He killed himself; he did the action. The girlfriend didn’t kill him. The bathrobe belt didn’t kill him. The manufacturers of the bathrobe belt didn’t kill him. Those who like, support and use bathrobes didn’t kill him.

    Hmm.

Also, suicides occur for reasons more than just a negative outlook on life. I DO agree that, through my experiences combined with case studies I’ve stumbled on, negative outlooks DID contribute to many of them, but there are also those with mental conditions with whom we cannot relate with.

    ok...

  14. He could have had a difficult childhood. Who knows. How about we don't blame anybody, including him, since we don't have sufficient information.

I hate how depression is treated by people as a pass for committing suicide. Every f'ing time I hear it, once you hear the 'd' word, automatic okay and green light for someone to off themselves. smh

Given the logic of 'rights', soon it will be socially acceptable that someone can commit suicide if they want to. they are suffering, they want to end it. it's the argument used for euthanasia. And 'rights' are also used for justifying abortion... sweeping every corner of the globe now. The language of morality is being drowned in the din.

  20. The headline news is not the only source of information. There have been books written, studies done that are accessible to the general public, and articles written in reputable journals.

The headline news is actually the worse place to get information.

So I stand by my statement. Mostly hear about suicudes amongst those that are well off vs. those that are poor.
