Anything that is secret between parent and child hurts and has to come out eventually. I suspect the secrets can also play a good role for the growing individual, as this gives a bit of distance and helps the building of the independence of the young being, but at my age - I am now grown up and I've walked my road to independence.

Thanks for underlining this! I personally ended up telling the truth about my addiction to: my parents (they were the first to know), then my girlfriend, and also my colleague, whom I see everyday at the office. All these steps in the confession of my problem seem to have given my addiction a critical hit in the nose! I hope it will slowly die away like it deserves to..
