Ethanol is literally poisonous for humans. Anyway, alcoholic drinks are just overpriced, empty calories. A bit like those cheap "fruit" drinks that contain a heapload of sugar, flavorings and no fruit, but with a poison added to top it off.

I've always found it odd how people say they need alcohol for social occasions in order to be able to converse or have fun. A few years back when I was an undergrad, after every group project, my group mates and I would go out to celebrate. They would order beers or something alcoholic, while I would simply make do with a soft drink or fresh fruit juice. At first it was fascinating to observe the change in their behaviors after a couple of beers. The most mindbogglingly boring conversations would take place, yet they would roar with laughter every few seconds.

It was then when I realized that for them, alcohol was an escape, a way to unwind and change their personalities, the same way that I would. Except I did it away from prying eyes and instead of alcohol, porn was my drug.

Eventually I got tired of sitting in the midst of their beer-induced, low quality conversations and one day, convinced them to do something while fully sober. I took them bowling and guess what? They had the time of their lives, even though they were skeptical at first and had the notion about requiring alcohol in order to have fun ingrained in them.

That's exactly how I felt when surronded by people high on weed.

    Weed users are the worst.

"I need this to keep my creative juices flowing." No, you feel you need it because you're addicted to it, stop making dumb excuses.

I don't drink because I have alcohol intolerance.

  5. Wow! I never imagined you to be that. I always imagined you to be a cross between Matt Lucas and Dwayne Johnson.
    I'm part Malaysian myself.

  6. A friend from Japan told me that they drink at business meetings and stuff, and they think it's a good way to see the 'true self' of their business associates.

Masturbating at a party would be even more awkward. Well I'd hope so...if not you're going to the wrong sort of parties ;-)

I'm not one to defend recreational marijuana, although as a medication it's amazing for some stuff (although it has contraindications, like all powerful medication).

That said, take a walk down any British high street at closing time on a Saturday night, and I think you'll agree that it would be so much cooler if the clubs were serving marijuana instead of alcohol.

  7. When I decided to get off drugs etc, the one thing I thought I'd allow myself is a beer or two at home- because weirdly, that never seems to trigger me (go figure). But I had one the other day, and I ended up forgetting my eggs when I went shopping. Never again.

Apparantly it says in the Vedas that life in the material world is like walking on a razors edge- I would agree, so I want to steer clear of anything that might make me lose my balance.

Most of my peers are alcoholics. Drugs and alcohol are choking us. Sad if you dwell on it.

Thing about smoking- it doesn't really get you high or anything, it's main function is to fulfill the craving established by having become addicted to it. Ridiculous drug. And, noone starts smoking because they fancy the smell...everyone started because it looks cool. About once a week some young lad asks me to buy them cigarrettes in a shop. Young men with so much potential. It really annoys me that us adults think nothing of smoking in public, normalising it, influencing the youth in such a destructive way. Infectious weakness.

That's true, especially for the Salarymen i.e. the city dwelling wage workers who dedicate their entire lives to one company. They have these events called 'Nomikai', where workers, after spending about 14 hours at office, go out to get blackout drunk with their boss and engage in events such as karaoke and more drinking games. Attendance is mandatory.

Of course, the next morning some of them would be making two hour train commutes back to work again, and everyone would pretend that they're not hungover and they don't remember their Manager dancing in his boxers. Ironically, these drinking parties are meant to relieve stress and foster closer relationships between the workers. A lot of them suffer from stress-related diseases when they hit their thirties, with heart attacks, stroke and suicide being the top three causes of death for Salarymen.

  9. Such a shame, because Japan is such an awesome country in certain ways from what I hear (peaceful, low crime, sense of national identity)...but you keep hearing about things like this, and kids flipping out cos its so hard in school. Like some kind of hyper-capitalism is choking people.

I heard of a geezer in Japan who turned to Zazen after he almost killed himself, and he opened a restaurant where all the staff have to join him for an hour of Zazen once a month- sounds much better than a fucking Nomikai!

  10. I decided to stop drinking almost 4 years ago(I was 14 at that time) because I've seen it as nonsense. My parents were never strict about me, so they have let me try beer when I was like 12, and I liked it. After that I tried other drinks like wine, and stronger ones like vodka and rakia, and I liked those as well. Alcohol was never a problem for me, I've got drunk only once, and after that decided to stop because I really didn't like the feeling of being drunk, and unlike my friends I've never seen it as "cool". Many of my friends tried alcohol for the first time when they were 16 or 17 y/o and now they're hooked up. I find it cringe when they start bragging about how they got drunk last night, and how many alcohol they drink(of course they always add few liters), for some reason they think they are cool because of that(good job morons, do you expect a medal for that?). I'm happy that I started at very young age and decided to quit early. Alcohol is huge thing in my country, people here love celebrating and getting drunk, that's why I don't like going to social events, I can't stand it when everybody around me is drunk and they're always pushing me to drink with them, even tho they know that I've stopped before they even started. My uncle(he loves drinking very much, gets drunk regularly) always speaks about how he can't wait for his kids(10 and 8 y/o) to start drinking, because drinking will solve all of their problems. I feel sorry for those kids...

When it comes to cigarettes I've only taken one smoke in my life, and my friend paid me to try. Honestly it's nothing special, here it's similar situation like with alcohol. Many people I know started smoking at very young age, and also seen it as cool thing to do because adults smoke, so they've seen themselves more mature than their friends. I don't know if you have ever seen 15 y/o who just started smoking, but it's very cringe. They don't realize that nobody gives a shit about them and the fact that they smoke, they think they're cool but actually they look like idiots. It honestly makes me disgusted when I see something like that, but it's normal in today's society. It makes me sick -_-

    Probably :D

I did on more than one occasion, as a drunk 18-year-old, whip my dick out or get naked...

I have done incredibly stupid things while drunk and have been very lucky to have mostly gotten away with them.

I rarely get drunk nowadays, though I have a drink when going out. Sadly, last time being drunk was also a trigger for another relapse... I will elaborate in the appropriate section.

I have never smoked or used illegal drugs. I have had one glass of wine in my life. I have chosen not to engage in these behaviors, partly for spiritual reasons, partly because of susceptibility to compulsive behaviors (PMO, eating, etc.), partly because of seeing the effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco (mother killed in collision with a drunken driver, other relatives died of lung cancer and emphysema), and partly because of parental example (both my wife and I came from non-smoking, non-drinking homes). What you do is your choice, but this lifestyle has served me well.
