Bastille's come out with some pretty sweet music recently. Check out "Doom Days" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOX30CHr4JY) and "Grip" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMlCPQVbsFc) if you haven't yet. Interestingly, "Doom Days" explicitly mentions porn as a societal problem and "Grip" seems to be about fighting addiction in general (and is quite representative of my own struggles with porn). Are there other songs that explicitly describe porn as a problem? Are there any songs that you think do a good job of representing your battle with porn?
Once In A Lifetime by The Talking Heads. It reminds me of how everything was good and I ruined everything.
Sirens by The Gray Havens Spoiler: Lyrics: Hold on my heart You once were full and sang of grace Hold on One taste of the sound From the sirens in the water And I'm thinking I should get out The sharpest sword and suit of armor So I can be ready to strike But I pause, one more time One last taste of the sound Then I'll cut these sirens down But as they sang, I forgot They were death, so I brought them my heart To be filled, and I followed them No trace could I find Of any joy the sirens promised They had found a way with a lie To turn what's good and should be wanted Into what is highest above all desires and loves Til my heart would obey Whatever it wants whatever it takes To feel alive and set free Only bound to the sea Where the sirens are leading me on Hold on Hold on, my heart You once were full and sang of grace Hold on Hold on, my heart You've tasted joy that's more than this Hold on Hold on, my heart You once were full and sang of grace Hold on Hold on, my heart You've tasted joy that's more than this Hold on
That song has some kind of lyrics. I definitely can see a theme of objectification in the song, too. Using porn definitely makes me feel like I'm going to the "sweet-faced ones" and treating them like they have nothing inside. You know, I've known about this song for a while, but I always assumed it was about embracing the Hollywood lifestyle, rather than satirizing it. I'm glad I took the time to listen to it! Not my jam musically, to be honest, but thanks for sharing! The lyrics are pretty great, though, and definitely relevant. This is a good song! The siren imagery is, of course, very appropriate.
Bullshit, @phoenix9. Sixx:A.M. is everyone’s music. Listen to: Life is Beautiful Lies of the Beautiful People This is Gonna Hurt Private Parts (by James Michael, the lead singer) — Also, listen to You Make Me Sick by Egypt Central.
@Deadlihood, that's good music, but it's not what I'm looking for out of my music. I definitely like their lyrics (especially on Lies of the Beautiful People and Private Parts), though. Still, I use music mostly for relaxing or for bouncing (I wanted to say "dancing" but I don't think anything that I do can properly be called dancing...) and Sixx: A.M. doesn't scratch either of those itches for me.
Not any Pixies songs that remind me of porn specifically. I guess Debaser should lol. Pixies are more for when life feels off in general for me. “I Bleed” “Cactus” “Where is...” and “Monkey...” come to mind. I had the pixies song in mind when I made the name, but I first thought of it because of the chorus from “Saturnz Barz” - Gorillaz.
Red's song "Of These Chains" just wrecks me. It doesn't speak of porn specifically, but it speaks of letting go of something you know is destructive, but still feels so painful to lose. I'm breaking free / but of these chains, let this one remain ...
The second verse is killer! "I can still feel you here / now in this cage / every link, another piece of you I saved. / Afraid to open up the door / to who I was before / and if I let go of these chains / now will I float away? / Can I just hold on?" It nails that mix of nostalgia and hatred that I feel towards porn. There's that crazy contrast between wanting to keep it around and wanting it to be gone forever and this song really hits that feeling on the head. Great recommendation.
Glad you liked it man! Yeah, Red is one of my favorites by a mile. They put out some great, meaningful music. You might like this one by them, too. What I fear and what I've tried / Words I say and what I hide / All the pain, I want it to end / But I want it again
Great lyrics again, but the music is a bit too...intense...for my taste. @Fausterity, that's a good one! I like the silver coil metaphor. Porn looks all shiny and great, but it's awfully restrictive...
