If it's subconsciously then in my experience, it's difficult to stop that. But if you are actively thinking or creating new fantasy scenarios then you need to stop yourself as fast asap. Other activities can contribute to a wondering mind for example watching a hardcore/adrenaline rushing movie or listening to certain music (before bed). It can come down to your stress levels. It's not an a simple question to answer.
