Engineer here . Stuck in an office job . Post grad degree educated but degrees just seem to shackle you to a desk and a computer

Was thinking about getting some more specialist qualifications which will allow me to work 4 week on/4 week off kind of jobs …. Or maybe just ducking off and going travelling for 6 months +

any suggestions ? Any one succeeded in escaping the office soul sacrificing lifestyle ?

Idk how it would work in real life but I once read a book called the 4 hour workweek and I'd recall that one of the suggestions there was to demand your boss to let you work remote. That way as long as you get your work done in time, things like how long you use to work, where you live and how you spend your time are none of your bosses business. As such in theory at least you could do things like travelling and do your work in shorter time than you'd be forced to be in office. But then again, I haven't tried it, nor have I ever worked an office job. And the sourcematerial I quoted seems to be kinda sensationalist. So make your own judgement calls.

Also I've understood that there are entire online communities dedicated to downshifting and other alternative ways to approaching labor. But obviously there are oftentimes also downsides to these lifestyles. For instance downshifting will propably also require you to cut on your expenses and forsake any dreams you might have of being rich one day. The 4 hour workweek -book also said something about how you'll have to rethink what rich life looks like, since unless you have a lot of luck or are already wealthy, 4hr/week just won't be enough to buy you yachts or private planes. Then again you've done well without them up till now too. Research your options and self reflect on what type of life you really want to live and what sacrifices you're willing to make for it.

  3. 20 years ago I had an office job as engineer.
Now I'm running my own biz.
That was a good change for me.

What is your business in? Was it engineering related ? How confident were you that it would take off ?

  6. Yes it's computer engineer related.
By that time I still had all kind of issues related to my porn addiction and wasn't able to keep a job.
So I decided to start for myself. I just begun and look what happened.
In the meantime, I'm almost 4 years on the run plus I have improved myself in the meantime with almost a year pmo free.
I'll see what will happen. Probably I will continue the business but it's a very lonely living actually so maybe I 'll switch to something where I 'll meet more people.
Maybe I'll do voluntary work next to it.
