I'll post in more detail when I'm back at PC, but the idea of this thread is to discuss harmful behaviours related to excessive internet usage, unrelated to porn. For example, it might be Facebook, YouTube, forums, or compulsive browsing.

My issue is with entertainment news sites. The number of times I refresh blogs that post news for videogames, films and comics is frankly unhealthy. It is a huge amount of time wasted in my day, and I will frequently put off the things I really need to do to check these sites. And then again. And maybe again after that... It's like a hampster in a Skinner box, maddly pulling the lever hoping for a scap of information, which gives me a momentary glee before I start looking again. And in the end, it has no benefit to me. I might even end up spoiling the entertainment I love because of it.

Anyway, this marks the first day of me putting an end to this behaviour once and for all. This is a permanent rule for my life, now. No entertainment news. Day 1.

Anyone else who has a similar problem, let's support each other and fill our day not with meaningless hits of world wide web, but meaningful hobbies and work.

When it comes to internet addiction, I'm addicted to YouTube, forums, compulsive browsing, and chess. Wikipedia can also be pretty addicting when I want to look things up without having to research them in depth. If I spend too much time looking at a monitor or my phone, my eyes start to feel tired. I've realized that most of the time, I'm just vegetating and not doing anything all that important online. I guess it's a combination of procrastination and lethargy that keeps me hooked on the internet.

But yes, it's good to step away from the computer. When I sit down at the computer after being away from it for several hours, it's more enjoyable than when I'm sitting in front of it all day.

I strugle with this so much. I sit down to do some work and after about 5 hours I find myself watching bullshit on youtube and that I didn't do anything. I'm trying different ways to fix this, but nothing is working for me.

As per my journal here I'm doing pretty well with this so far. My productivity at the computer is much improved. I feel this is so important because when you have the internet at your fingertips you can either be your most productive and creative or your most passive and destructive. Choosing the later and thus failing to take advantage of the former is shooting yourself in both feet with one bullet.

You can also block hindering sites like YouTube, either with an internet browser extension or through the hosts file on your PC. Google for a tutorial. Maybe you should make a new signature counter with the text "since last visited banned websites".
