Avoiding trigger to all cost mindset

Discussion in 'Porn Addiction' started by Deleted Account, Feb 1, 2019.

  1. What do you think of "Avoiding trigger to all cost" ?

Avoiding triggers to me is like saying "I'm not completely sure I want to quit yet. I better take some precautions because I don't trust myself"

The way I look at is comparing it to alcoholism. Would an alcoholic keep beer in the fridge? Eliminating triggers or using accountability software are for me personally a necessity. Just my opinion of course

It may not be necessary but it's a tool on your belt... so why not use it?

I think one shouldn't avoid triggers. It enforces exactly the kind of mindset that you aren't ready to go all in. It's important to withstand all kinds of urges and triggers, so you get stronger when dealing with them. If you don't, then one day you will have a "bad" day and are easily triggered, and because you avoided triggers at all cost, you now fall easily. Triggers are like levels in a game. First you practice dealing with a minor one, and it becomes easy and you move on to worse ones.

  5. It depends on the level of addiction. Sometimes it is hard to stop yourself after dealing with a minor one and you relapse. I'd go for trigger-free period and then you can start introducing triggers gradually - because we will never live in a vacuum free of triggers - and be very mindful about your reactions to them.
