So I've been addicted to porn for more than 10 years. I have tried all sorts of ways to quit, installed internet blockers, taken numerous supplements, and nothings really worked in the end as I can't get stop it. This has honestly ruined my life, I hate it so much. And my problem is my job is essentially to do research as I am a postgrad student, so I am at home all the time and I can hold myself off for about a day and then I'm back on this.

I have tried all the usual recommendations of keeping door open, doing exercise, even reading much of the YBOP book which is great but if I hold off for long enough (about 7/8 days), the urges are just uncontrollable and I can't focus on anything else.

If anyone has any help or advice It would be great, thanks.

if you focus on something long enough you become better at it, for me thinking about nofap and identifying the dangers of porn and masturbation on my life in a way rewired my brain, kind of like the law of attraction, i call it law of deflection.
my mind has got sharper and more powerful during nofap, and its not just based on my streaks but on my level of focus, if you focus every day aiming a bow and arrow at a target over time you will get good at it, its the same with many things in life

my mind has actually surprised me, and its exciting

You sound like me 18 months ago, thinking it was impossible to get past a few days without PMO. Well now I am at 33 days and counting, but only after a few relapses. Here's three things that worked for me, hope they help.
    1. You have to really understand WHY you are trying to abstain and therefore why you are doing this. At the critical moments you can then remind yourself 'I am doing this because....' and that should help you control the urge. Ultimately it comes down to your will to abstain vs the urge to continue.
    2. The fundamental lesson I learnt from my relapses is what the triggers are that make me start PMO. The trigger is the start point for a series of actions that lead to PMO. It might be an image, a thought, a file you have secretly on your laptop, a person you meet, a function you go to etc. Start a program of eliminating these triggers - it might take some trial and error. In my experience, stopping the triggers is a lot easier than trying to resist the urge once you are well down the path. And I learnt what my triggers are by analyzing what had caused me to relapse. So treat every relapse a lesson learnt - a step forward. You have to be ruthless in eliminating them. Act as if you life depends on it and see point 1.
    3. As someone already suggested, set smaller achievable targets , achieve them, and build on the successes. I found it absolutely daunting to aim for 1 month, 90 days etc and my first attempts at nofap failed. Now I aim for 5 days. Then another 5 days etc - that's how i am getting there. Maybe in your case try 2 days, then another 2. But make sure you celebrate achieving each 2 - come back here and tell us!

Finally, use this forum as a place to come to for daily support and encouragement. You are not alone. We are all trying to beat this together.

I suggest you do some guided meditation aka guided visualization on youtube. I recommend you thehonestguys. They have some of the most intriguing videos of visualization there. I also recommend you to stay away from hypnosis because my mom said they have some really bad side effects as well too. Exercise and keeping a healthy diet is also recommended.

  5. Find out how you are getting around the p blockers and plug the hole. Exercise. Have goals and improve every facet of your life, not just pmo. Improve your health, career, self. I Recommend book release your breaks. Lmk if you have questions. You can do it. Celebrate small wins. Baby steps. Once you get past one day celebrate, 2 days celebrate. Once you get past 8 days celebrate. Journal a lot. Like sone one else said triggers are an importsnt thing to understand aND be aware of. For me it was dating wrbsites. I now stay away. It could be frustration for you. I would say go exercice or get away from comp. P blocker's man.
