Hi folks, I'm a 37 year old man with perhaps 25 years of usage behind me (maybe the first 5 in the era before internet porn and certainly not at a level to be considered as addiction)

Porn has, in hindsight, seriously hindered my life. I think it would be naïve to say that it's the root of all my woes but it has certainly contributed to my torpidity, low self esteem and terrible relationship history!

I won't go into too much detail here as I've given a hefty intro to my reboot diary (linked below) but suffice to say, I'm pretty sure pmo has had a large part to play in relationships crumbling, bouts of (seemingly) inexplicable ED and a crippling lack of confidence. So recently I decided to put P & M behind me permanently and as a result of googling "quitting porn ball ache" I came across this community and realised that what I was doing was a real thing in the wider world and not just an oddity unique to me and my bad habits.

As I say I got it the wrong way round here (as is my habit) and started posting my quitting journal before my intro here.

My plan is to start with a 90day challenge and then work up from there. Shoot for the moon right? Haha

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the challenge and having what appears to be a good community to bounce off.
    :)

Additionally, does anyone know if excessive or heightened emotions are a common side effect of porn addiction? I have had issues with the most random and minor things upsetting me and triggering powerful sadness and I'm not sure if it coincides with my porn habit, other addictions I've battled, a bereavement a few years ago that I struggled with or if I've just become an emotional wimp as I've aged!

Any input would be great. Thanks :)

  3. Hey Skippy1209,
I get easily upset or very sad from minor stuff when my general wellbeing is low.
That is contributed to porn but also other area's where I don't take enough care of myself.
Forest walks or sitting at a lake is then oil for my soul.(takes effort as I'm living in a big town).

    Glad you found this community.

And you can do the 90 days!

Thanks guys. As I say I'm pretty optimistic but trying to recognise that it is gonna be a challenge and get too carried away!
Shamgar, I have a pretty good routine now which I started before I even considered nofap. Regular running and gym are so benifits!

Cleanliving81, I surely will. Asking for help with anything has always been a stumbling point for me but in recent years I've realised that asking is more courageous and not asking makes you (me) weaker!

    Thanks again :)

  6. Hi. Welcome to forum!

Glad to hear that you have decided to journal, make sure you indeed blog there on a regular basis. As well as just generally be active participant in various forum discussions. I recommend this to everybody new here because it's the major thing that helped me when I was first starting. Just lurking on forums, reading and learning is great. But it usually is so much more powerful to engage. It helps to keep us motivated and accountable when we are active part of community. And keeps this in front of our minds so we don't forget about importance of it and slip away in our old habits. Sharing is also therapeutic. This is a major reason why AA meetings work so good. But that was developed before internet era. These days we can get most of the same benefits online through communities like this. So don't underestimate the power of active participation.

I would also like to suggest you to look into mindfulness meditation. It has helped me personally tremendously to learn how to deal with urges and triggers. It takes a while to get good at it and notice results, so you need to be consistent with it, but once you do it's very powerful. It has been used by sages for thousands of years to deal with various issues of the mind. And in recent decades the science is also catching up to what ancient sages have know for centuries. Meditation these days are widely used as very effective tool by psychologists for treating addiction and by neurologists for supporting recovery of the brain after physical injury. Plus it is generally a great exercise for the brain the same way as jogging is great exercise for the body.

You gotta make sure it is proper mindfulness meditation though. "Mindfulness" meditation where we just focus on breath is more like a concentration meditation instead. It works too but differently and not as powerfully in my experience. Real mindfulness meditation however trains you to accept your urges by understanding the nature of them by observing them, not just suppress them by concentrating on something else instead. It makes you comfortable with them. And once you accept and become comfortable with them there is no need to get rid of them, so there is no need to PMO. Only reason why we PMO is because that urge, that itch in our crotch is uncomfortable, we wanna get rid of it. And then after PMO we have our release. Or we simply want pleasure. And inability to have that pleasure makes us uncomfortable. But if we accept that we can not have pleasure then resistance is gone and there is no reason to PMO.

Acceptance and mindfulness is the key. Check out this Ted talk on acceptance and mindfulness practice, it gives a good idea of what's it's about when it comes to philosophy. The mindfulness practice as described by psychologist in a the video can be used by itself but ideally should be used as supplementation to your daily sitting meditation. Sitting meditation I personally practice and recommend to people is as explained by meditation expert in this YouTube playlist. If you don't like the monk or want other method there is this awesome smartphone app called Headspace for guided meditations.

Wish you lot's of strength and success in your reboot journey!

Ha no way! I just watched that Ted talk yesterday, found it useful and entertaining and was preparing to share it all over this place.
Well thanks very much for the welcome and advice. I've tried various types of meditation over the years (for reasons other than addiction) and I'm keen to resume.
With cravings I tended to adopt a "play it through" mentality which has also worked fairly well.
I'm adding nofap to a list of other addiction resolutions I'm working on (tobacco, alcohol and drugs) and wondered if it was too much to do all at once but I actually feel like dropping all of them at once is easier because they are interrelated somewhat so I can bundle the cravings in to one pigeonhole.

You are spot on with so much in that one message, even over just two days I have found a great empowerment talking to people here and as a Jordan Peterson fan, I'm a firm believer in the power of writing your thoughts so I'll be logging in my journal a lot!

Thanks again for the welcome and I wholeheartedly return my offer to be a sounding board if you or any others wish to use me.

    Be well man :)
