An interesting take on the source of an addiction. The thing is.... We all at one point chose to look at porn. At one point we wanted it. Before it was an addiction, before it had control, we wanted it. The question is why. Why did we feel compelled? Why did we seek this out over real partners? Why did we abandon real things in order to pursue a fantasy?

This article argues that addiction is the outcome not the primary cause. That we all could or could not be addicted. The circumstances are very important for people to become addicts. When you have people who are well balanced, have good social lives, and good environments they tend to not get addicted even though they partake in things like occasional smoking, drinking, sex, and porn. They dont get addicted and they dont feel the need for these things constantly.

While this may not constitute scientific evidence, there is an important point in this. Change your environment and the urge will naturally go away.

I've noticed when im having fun, exercising, having a good time socially, or other good things I don't even think about pmo. Not even on my radar at all. Its important to me to keep a happy life. When I feel isolated I turn for the pc. Then I become worse. When I feel sad, or angry, or upset, I reach for the pc. Its my pacifier. When I try to ignore what I dont like about my life I always go for the sexy women on screen.

Don't try to muscle your way through. Theres a reason that you go for pmo and its probably not sexual. What dont you like about your life? Try to make it better. What are you trying not to feel? Investigate it and feel it.

Thats all. This has helped me more than putting blocks on every device I own. Not that thats a bad idea, I still do that.

  2. That's really interesting. The real challege is to get distracted and seek for new and healthy activities. But once in a while we all get in bad mood and is hard to resist the urges anyway :/

An interesting article. I guess it shows the importance of getting busy with other activities you'll enjoy, and spending time with friends. I'm going to add that it also highlights the importance of cutting toxic people out of your life. They will often create an environment conducive to a relapse.

I was using PMO to numb my feelings. Emotions can be painful, but also empowering.

Yeah, I was (and still sometimes do) doing the same thing. It's much more complex than just throwing the computer away. You have to investigate yourself. Not that I still don't have to take precautions for weak moments but looking into myself and the root of my urges has helped me much more than quitting cold turkey. Improving my life and social circle has helped me much more than deleting apps. When I feel good I don't feel the need for PMO which helps me feel better. It's not always that simple but it's the general trend.

  6. Extremely interesting article. It all comes down to connectedness, love and feeling like your a part of a community.

The antidote to addiction is connection. Always.

Great post man! I agree with you 100%. As it pertains to many addictions, it isn't so much what the person is addicted to as much as it is, WHY the person is addicted. The WHY is the real issue! Great insight man and a great article!
