Do you agree with the death penalty for the worst violent crimes?

  1. There are plenty of reasons for forgiveness, and not all of them are for the benefit of the person you're forgiving. They're for your benefit as well. I'm sure you can learn much about that if you are actually interested, but it doesn't really sound like you are. I'm not saying that in a judgemental way, it's just the way it appears.

I'm glad you at least see our perspective to some degree :)

Well, we are all sinners, and I don't think it's unusual for most people to have a hard time forgiving those who hurt their loved ones. That's completely understandable. But there have definitely been some incredible stories of people forgiving others for horrible things they've done, and I find those stories to be very uplifting. It may even result in the person changing their life, because they want to be worthy of that forgiveness. I'm not trying to say it would be easy or that anyone is a bad person for not being able to forgive someone for doing something terrible to their loved ones. That's totally normal.

  2. I do know what you speak of to an extent in terms of forgiveness, I just couldn't do it, especially if it was murder.

Hence why I said it was unusual. 3-4 days expectancy is typical without water. The persons general health makes a big difference, and room temperature.

LOL we're all sinners. Forgiving someone is one of the hardest things you can do, especially for something like murder. Personally i don't think i would be strong enough to forgive someone for that. But this is why we view forgiveness as one of the highest virtues...

I think regardless of your religious background, forgiveness should be something everyone should try to achieve, because the reality is we've all screwed up at one time and we've all wanted forgiveness from someone else. No one is above hurting someone else, so when we are wanting others to forgive us, we should be willing to do the same.

  7. I agree with tweeby, there has been no escalation. My opening post was simply a newspaper article discussing different methods used for state executions in America. The discussion has been entirely respectful and a wide variety of opinions expressed on if such executions should happen at all and what are the reasons for and against their use for lethal violence.

FYI, the UK have not executed anyone for over 50 years. The death penalty has been completely done away with here.

  8. That's interesting. How do you feel about that? Do you think that has had a positive effect on your society, a negative effect, or neutral? How was it repealed? Was there a vote or something, or what? I have no idea how that stuff works over there, to be honest.

  9. And while I have forgave some people in the past for some things, murder goes beyond just a wee bit more than screwing up. There are some things worth forgiving and others that should be forgiven in life, but to me that is definitely not one of them.

Call me a cold twat but I have no compassion or empathy for such people and I know if I killed somebody, I would not want forgiveness as I committed that crime myself full well knowing the consequences.

Murder may be the extreme case. Let's say your SO cheated on you and asked for forgiveness afterwords because he was actually sorry. Would you forgive him?

  12. No one has been executed by the Government in my lifetime, so it inclines me to believe that they are not a good thing (on balance). I find that my views can swing a little one way to the other and back depending what are the latest shocking cases of torture and murder. When there is a case in the news and the details are revealed about the heartless perpetrator and the suffering of the victim(s), then death feels like appropriate justice. But I do not agree with God's law to Israel that some criminals should be stoned to death. I am not sure why God would sanction state torture of wrongdoers.

I have no idea if not having the death penalty since 1964 has had a positive or a negative effect on effect on society, or none at all. I do not know how it was repealed. If you want to read about state executions in UK, here is the link for it:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_the_United_Kingdom

  13. I would have to have that happen to me (thankfully it won't) to see, but in terms of the seriousness of cheating I would say probably no. It may very well depend on the circumstances but if he betrayed me by cheating on me that would mean he didn't love me very much no? Because when you love somebody you don't need to screw or have any kind of intimate relationship like that with somebody else.

You probably won't see the difference but say if he was using porn, I could forgive him for possibly doing that but obviously trust would be broken because he hid it from me like that, but such severe things like cheating is even worse and would have even more impactful consequences than the former.

I noticed there was a show on TV this week about Ruth Ellis.

  16. I'm not sure it did. With the mistakes in the Bible, I think everything stated in scripture should be taken with a pinch of salt. I think it's likely a number of the things the Bible claims God said was the what the writers wanted God to say. Many of God's commands recorded in the Bible have the same attitude as other tribes around at the time. Claims made by the children of Israel are also made by their enemies.

I don't think anyone should take the numbers mentioned in the Old Testament literally, nor believe everything in the accounts. I think the writers didn't care about facts or giving an accurate account of what happened. They didn't care about writing a good historical account, they just wanted to spread propaganda imo.

It's interesting Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also". He didn't say God told you, he said you have heard it said. There is no evidence from these words of Jesus that God actually commanded an eye for an eye.

If some of the commands in the OT are what actually was commanded then I think this God is evil. I think it's fair to say in several places this OT God commands genocide. When you think about the war stories in the OT they are really messed up. The Bible basically claims these people invaded and wiped out nations because they believed something different to them. That is even worse than what the Nazi did. I'm sorry this might upset some Christians, but imagine if a Prime Minister or President said that God told him/her they should invade and wipe out all the countries in their continent. We would be horrified and they would probably be removed from office.

I think religion will of course come up since religion has plenty to say on the subject. Maybe this should be moved to the interreligious section.

  17. Does that mean banishment to the Island of Perpetual Tickling is an ineffective punishment? :emoji_speak_no_evil:
