I was having a discussion with a friend of mine on pmo addiction (he doesn't believe in it). He said that masturbating is just natural and a lot of other animals also do it. I've seen dogs licking their dicks but that's not masturbation I think. What's your view on this?

Not sure, but you can just refer your friend to the addiction section on here, or challenge him to go 1 month without it. He'll feel some withdrawal symptoms and believe it then. Even if other animals do it, that doesn't make it good. Animals rape each other to assert dominance, murder and eat each other (including their own young), and sleep in nests full of their own crap. His argument is weak.

In the wild, primates will masturbate in front of females before having sex. The theory is that they possibly do it to clear out less well functioning sperm to increase the chances of conception. No animal sits in front of porn and masturbates to it so there is nothing natural about the way humans masturbate.

Animals do masturbate. Some of them discover that they can because of high intellect (like apes) and some just discover it by accident and then trains themselves to keep doing it by conditioning (such as dogs). Arguably masturbation is natural. But natural does not always equals good for you. Besides, we are highly intellectually advanced beings. We should be aiming to transcend beyond the realm of nature instead. Not keep us stuck in reactive behaviors governed by our animal mind.
True. All we can do is try to educate though, and people have to make their own decisions from there. Offering a challenge might not be best, because he can just brush that off with an excuse, but if you pull up a few threads that might resonate with him, and show them to him, that could be the start.
I do not think there is a correlation between intelligence and masturbation! When I started masturbating @13 it had nothing to do with intelligence I assure you!
Now that I think about it you're probably right. We don't really think about it, we just do what feels good. The same way dog would condition itself. Only different is probably just that the more intelligent creature is the faster they would draw a connection between why this happened and how to replicate it again.
