I've been practicing meditation for years now, and wondering how it helps anyone else with their urges. I find that the urge to fap is quite an overwhelming one, more so than any other urges that I can mindfully accept, and ignore.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Hmm.. I'm coming from a science background, so I don't necessarily believe in God or the soul.

That being said, in principle, a lot of the things in that article resonate with me; it's just that I might use different terminology to describe it.

    Thanks a lot!

Hi fappedout26, I have been practicing Yoga and mediation for about 6-8 years now. If not each and every day but I was/am regular. say 4-5 times a week or some time 7 days a week ..it depends. I am this same guy who is looking for higher purpose in life practicing yoga, mediation, mindfulness awareness etc... Listening to cream of knowledge/wisdom from awakened individuals..., at the same time jerking off to porn most every day. I have contemplated many time, asking how is all this helping matters anyways.

As you know benefits of meditation can be looked-up all over the internet, but here I would like to share randomly the outcome of my contemplation. Please take what makes sense to you and ignore the rest.

    1) Some individuals have higher sexual drive than the others...heightened hormonal activity in the body.
    2) Physical activities like running, working out in a gym, dancing & singing, boxing, yoga, swimming etc..could channelize/burn once energy/drive which is un-directed or excess in the system. Now (after physical activity) meditation becomes more effective and easier or to slip into nothingness.
    3) What we take in physically and mentally into our system also plays a huge role. For example..the food we eat (fatty or oily food, certain plants and animal flesh induces more drive), things we watch/listen(television shows, movies, music) could provoke excessive drive.

So what is helping me now is, I have come to terms with porn and masturbation, that it is harmful..it has degraded my life, my passion ..my abilities.. my ideas..friendship..relationship..job etc.... Now I don't care who/what helps me come out of this situation...I don't care if god or devil...divine or demon .....helps me get out of the filthy situation that I am in. I want to break free out of this cycle. nu

So I continue doing Yoga and Meditation practices, Sports, Cold water shower, Socializing, openly talking about my addiction to people and steps that I am talking to get out of it etc.

    Yeah, similar to me.

Some how I was able to separate porn from my meditation practice without acknowledging the contradiction.
It just happens so fast; Its almost as if you have no sense of what you're doing the moment you get the urge, til after you've finished.
I think in that sense I could very easily ignore it, and it actually took me quite a while to realise how regularly I used porn.

If you're addicted to drugs, alcohol, smoking etc. its harder to ignore because there are so many stages to that process. In order to get your poison you have to leave the house, go to the store or your dealer, spend money etc. Porn is different, using is so easy; its as simple as hitting a switch. Home alone? Should I watch porn? Yeah, lets watch porn- bam.

One thing that mindfulness has helped me do (rather than actually stopping watching porn) Is distinguishing between actual sex drive and wanting to watch porn. If you pay close attention, the sensations are entirely different. Watching porn is more about satisfying the need for novelty; having a sexual experience with a woman is a very different thing and both the urge, and the act itself comes with a completely different set of sensations. So, I'm not really concerned about reducing my sex drive (I have a girlfriend who I haven't been satisfying lately) I'm much more interested in being able to get go of my desire for novelty and allow more focus on what is truly important to me.

Another thing I've noticed, is that the sensation of wanting to look at porn shares a lot of properties with other more banal pastimes. Scrolling through facebook, randomly searching for 5-10 minute videos on youtube thumbing through your phone. The thing that porn has in common with these things is a quick fix, a cheap thrill.
What I try to gear my life more so towards is things that take time, taking pleasure in things that take longer; like reading books, cultivating skills, getting myself involved in creative processes etc. In terms of sexual activity, that would be paying more attention to, and treating my girlfriend better.

I've been meditating since March and I can say it has helped with mindfulness, but also with being aware a lot more of being in the present moment. This is beneficial because it helps me face the harsh reality of my situation trying to quit PMO.

I've meditated for 25 years since I was in a bad auto accident. I had a near death experience. I excitedly learned many methods. It's kind of like lifting weights. You do it a lot and you build muscle. You stop and the benefits go away. There are hundreds of methods. IMO some have more value than others. Some go out, some go in with energy. Some or most have little or no awareness of non-physical energy. Some deal with the mind, others deal with the heart and other areas.

This comment is very debatable, but to get benefit you need to do it consistently for 20-60 minutes per day. It takes me a month to clear out the junk and gain a clear thoughtless mind if I haven't been meditating. Then I get a benefit from it, but not before. I use a meditation that focuses on the breath and the heart. It's an inward, heart focused, presence generating meditation. Heartmath and it's sensor on the iphone is a diluted version of the style I use.

In my case, meditation could have an impact upon nofap, but I had to do it about 90 minutes per day, every day. I think this is just a statement that dopamine, dependency and DeltaFOSB are very strong. I just don't have that much time to meditate. Or perhaps, it's just that I've very addicted. I dunno.
