A snapshot of the state of affairs in society is gleaned from 5 minutes of watching the daily news:

    Police officer hit and run

    Murder in the western suburbs

    Surfer killed by a shark

Local football story (cross promoted due to station having football screening rights)

    Sink hole in China

    Lose weight drinking water

Donald Trump- Is his hair real?

Now I am betting that a lot of you reading this may think well, that is pretty standard. What the hell is wrong with that? My thoughts and opinions on the state of affairs in society have changed dramatically since doing NoFap. For instance, telemarketers. Before, I would do them the courtesty of hearing them out, at least for a few minutes. Now, I realise the blatant truth. People are manipulating us all the time. Trying to sell us things we do not need. Consumerism is the new religion.

I guess the message I am attempting to get across here is, when did we forget about what really matters in life? Why is it so important to have a face book or social media account? To parade our superficial observations about the latest meaningless trends or memes? When was the last time we read a great novel, or held a strangers hand to secure them from falling down a jagged trail? Why do I need to suppose that this brand is in, that one is out; Why do I need to see on the nightly news that a house was burned down, or someone got murdered? Is that not the nature of living in an urban environment?

I think what matters most becomes slowly but surely realized when taking into account our problems we are having with porn and masturbation. I truly believe we begin to think for ourselves more, rather than letting society and culture do our thinking for us. When we begin to cut through the BS and live with our values and principles at the forefront of our mind. My journey thus far has helped me open up my eyes to some aspects of this. Never take anything at face value. Use the wonderful powers of observation.

    Well said!

I think Facebook is only really useful for one thing – encouraging humans to find ways to meet in person, face to face. Just hanging out at a coffee shop and reading a book and/or chatting with random people is so much more satisfying than scrolling Facebook.

The crap on the news is ridiculous, totally agree. There is a lot of bad news to be found among 7 billion humans if you chasing after it like the news organizations do. But at the same time there are all kinds of positive things happening and we can contribute to that. Just smiling at someone in the right moment can change their whole day for the better. Imagine doing that just once a day and deleting an hour of Facebook.

Spending time in person with people, even if it's passive while reading a book in a coffee shop, is so, so much better for us than too much time on the internet. Avoiding porn is helping me to be less socially awkward and enjoy my time outside more.

    Great post SOTT...

IMHO... There is a lack of integrity and compassion prevalent in today's society. A promise is nothing and hate is dispensed on ideological differences. What happened to love and caring. We live in a society that for the most part lacks very little. Yet many walk around with anger and hate in there hearts.

At the end of our lives only a few things matter... Friends, family and how our lives enriched others. No one will care what outfits were wore at the VMA Awards... Miley showing lots of flesh.. Instead the real beauty lies in giving oneself to others, like a mother Theresa...

Sage advice from a friend of mine.... Never resist a generous impulse.

Thanks man that is nice to consider that we are thinking about our thinking process. I did not really want to commit these thoughts down publicly but they have been swirling around my head for a couple of weeks and the more I take notice of the everyday things like the media et. al. the more I have positioned myself against it. But there is a fine line between a good philosophical observation and a rant and I guess I need to be weary of that. It is an interesting thought, and perhaps (maybe) a symptom of coming off the old paradigm, that this is starting to happen.

I don't know where you live, but yeah - why bother with any of it. It's all so anti-life, life affirming and live giving - to me, watching the news everyday would be enough to make me never want to leave my apt. because a little girl or boy walking by, maybe bouncing a ball or something might pull out a knife and stab me.

Makes a person wonder, at least me, how much different would it be if the news focused on all the great things going on and skipped all the horrible stuff. Still the same truth, it's all the truth - just the other - more uplifting side of things. I'm with ya on all that of what you said. There's a hell of a lot more to life than the things we're told in a lot of the messages all around us that are important and will make us happy.

Turn the TV off, go out and interact with real people and have real connections however = happy (and maybe even free)

Watch out for children with knives in their boots though!

I completely agree with this - there is a deep profound lack of love here in this culture. What's happened..

The ones expressing concern about this are demonized, ridiculed, laughed at... or thought of as boring. I've even seen they are heaped on with spite and malice of all kinds, demonized for wanting to be "old, traditional, outdated and even (inverted reality here) hateful Christians, people, substitute whatever here. It's like the attacking are attributing those qualities to the ones they are attacking.

Give me a break. Something has gotten inside and turned this country upside down against itself.

I just ignore all media now, I unplug from it all - the mainstream media - and try to live my life according to God's - and humanities - values of love, family, friendship community and mutual respect.

  9. This is why I don't consume popular culture at all. We ne3ed to stand up and become cultural creators instead of sitting in our couches and just being cultural consumers.

When I unplug, I go insane, that is indication enough of the situation. Technology has seriously messed up the day to day social fabric. It just doesn't feel right.
