What book did you last read?

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Deleted Account, Nov 14, 2017.

  1. Yet again I tried to search the forum to see if this kinda thread had been done before. I couldn't find anything.

So yeah the title is pretty self-explanatory, but I'll say it still. So yeah after I started on this PMO journey (yes it has turned out to be all those three letters even though it says porn on my counter) I started to read more books. Mostly because I wanted to read more. Push myself to do that. If I don't I probably will just alternate between tv-shows and video-games and in the long run I don't see that as good for me. So I wanted to read more. So I set a goal for reading half an hour every day. I haven't gotten to uphold that quite yet, but I am reading 3-4 days of of seven, so I am thinking that's quite good.

So yeah, what book did you last read and what did you think about it?

I just finnished readin American Gods by Neil Gaiman. My main reasoning for reading it was because I was gonna watch the tv-show. I watched the first season while reading the book. I liked the show, but I gotta say I liked the book more. It was more detailed, duh, and I got to know the characters more intimately. It also made me want to read more of Neil Gaiman. Any suggestions of his while we're at it?

I really liked Shadow in the book and also in the show. But I did like him more in the book and his story. I am not gonna say too much about the plot since it's gonna be heavy on spoilers. I am just gonna say that I like Gaimans writing style, how he does dialogue and how he presents his characters. And the book isn't quite different from the show, but I do like the atmosphere here more. Even though the show pretty much nailed that as well. There are some differences from book to show that I liked and some I didn't. Gonna stop comparing the two of them now, because that is doing a disservice to the thread. I also liked all the interludes in between the main story. Not gonna say much more afeared that I might dip into spoiler territory.

    Now your turn :)

  2. All The Way: My Life on Ice - Jordin Tootoo
For those who don't know who he is he was the first Nunavut hockey player in the NHL and he struggled with alcoholism and what really motivated me about his book is that he could get wasted the night before and still perform at a high level in the toughest league in hockey. He's been through a lot of tragedies in his life and one day he became sober. It reminds me of my struggle with noFap where pornography has consumed me for the last 15 years and I didn't knowledge it as a serious problem until 75 days ago. If he can get sober than I can conquer porn addiction.

  3. Recently read The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge. It's an incredible book and one that has encouraged me to start the process of re-wiring my life out of PMO. Highly recommended.

Did you like it? I've got a copy at home but haven't got around to reading it yet!

My latest book, and the only book I've read in quite some time - The happiness trap.
A self help book of sorts, that gives a refreshing take on the struggles all people have in their minds.
It's based on a popular psychology theory called ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy).

I don't know much about psychology, but this book describes everything in a way that is very easy to understand and connects many problems with good analogies. I've taken months to get through it (it asks you to take breaks and try techniques throughout most of the book). It's not one to rush through, but to slowly take in and decide whether or not the contents and ideas are right for you (it even says that too lol). It's helped a lot in this addiction I should mention as well!

  5. "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". I know it is a classic, obviously i already knew the plot but for all the years i was an addict i had less and less focus on things, i could barely finish any task, it was a nightmare. i had this book for tons of years (it has yellowish pages). Nice not my favourite one, def gives me some food for thought

for my next book to read, i still have books in my house i haven't read yet so i will find the most suitable in this period for me in my small collection

It's a book about masters dealings with legalism, guidebook and "get-out-of-jail-free-card" insurance. Excellent book for those that are interested in sailing across the globe.

    The Marauders by Tom Cooper.

It was incredible. I can't remember when I enjoyed a novel that much for the last time. Probably reading Harry Potter as a kid. I finished it in about 3 days, which is really fast for me. I was totally looking forward to read in it with a good cup of tea everyday. The characters are so well written and it totally pulled me in. It was his first novel and I really can't wait until he releases another book.

I last read textbooks for my classes, if that counts.

Other than that, the last ones I've read were The Brothers Karamazov as well as Children of Gebelawi, which are both more of philosophical novels based in Russia and Egypt, respectively. I enjoyed them both; either heaps of symbolism or tons of allegorical stories.

  11. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. The third book in this series just came out and I'm re-reading to get refreshed before I dive into the new one.

Do you mean you memorize portions of the bible to help you sleep? I do the same thing. When my mind keeps me awake I repeat psalms I have memorized in my mind until I fall asleep. It works wonderfully.
