Waking up at night — is it masturbation or a wet dream?

    Hi everyone,

I've been working on controlling PMO urges for years now. I've made some significant progress. Now, I use porn maybe once a month or a little less. My goal is to go 90 days porn-free, and ideally MO free as well. However, I have a question about whether something that I do during porn-free periods counts as masturbation or not.

While abstaining from porn, I find that maybe once a week or so, I wake up in the night humping my bed. It's almost always 60-90 minutes after lights out. I wish I could say that was the end of it, but I've almost never managed not to continue through orgasm. My mind is foggy when it happens, and I feel like whichever part of my brain says "stop" when I resist urges successfully during waking hours just isn't there or "on." The next morning, when I wake up, I never have any idea of how it all started, so I'm pretty sure that I'm still asleep when the humping starts.

Does anyone else experience this? How do you view it? Is it something I need to reset over, or is it just a more conscious wet dream? I've experienced many barely-conscious wet dreams (where I'm not moving, and my mind isn't aware anything is happening at all until I'm about to orgasm) and totally-unconscious wet dreams too (where I don't even know anything happened until the next morning).

I don't like it when this happens, partly because I'm unsure what it is. On the other hand, I haven't the slightest idea how I would try to stop this behavior, since I'm never in control of my mental faculties when I start down the slippery slope.

Looking forward to your thoughts and especially knowing if this happens to others on here. Thanks.

Only you can answer whether you're conscious of what youre doing or not. If you realize what's going on and dont try to stop it, that's a wank, friendo.

But there is a legitimate 'half-sleep' where youre near a wet-dream, are barely conscious, and some sort of blurry nudging ends in unexpected fireworks. That doesnt count.

It only counts if youre fully, morally aware of what youre doing.

    Alex is spot on.

Also, you might be a sexsomniac. They are real. I have a buddy who is. He wakes up right before the fireworks and he's having sex with his wife. Something to consider

Here's something interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1et5NgT6bQ Watch the video (2 minutes long), and then read my comment.

Maybe you're waking up during a rem cycle.

I have had the same thing occur to me before. It recently happened again a few nights ago. If you feel your brain isn't fully functioning, I would NOT reset. Just try to go back to sleep. Unless you can remember that you decided to hump something, let it go.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. And thanks for the video. Does sound like I might be waking up out of REM. Anyway, I'm not going to count this as a reset. For my current 90-day goal, at least, I'm going to focus on what I think I can control. These nighttime episodes are really like autopilot until it's too late. The annoying thing about the most recent one is that I had gotten home a bit tipsy and was conscious that I'd be tempted to some bad things online. So, I deliberately shut the computer, got out a book, and made myself read until I was too tired to keep reading. I thought, "What a success!" It was a nice feeling to know I had recognized a temptation and combated it. But then REM, or whatever it is, took over an hour after bedtime.

The one thing I might do differently next time: I might try a cold shower before bed (never tried it before) if I have that "tipsy and temptable" feeling when getting home. On the other hand, I've experienced the waking-up phenomenon after totally quiet and normal, drinks- and temptation-free evenings.

Enough rambling from me. I'll get back in touch if I get any more thoughts on this. Thanks again!

It might be the same thing, but I notice myself doing this myself too. If your single it's actually quite nice to wake up halfway till orgasm, but the humping is getting out of control. I sleep with two pillows, one for my head and one to hold in my arms. Don't know why yet, but I fall asleep way faster. During the night I have these 'porn dreams' or just regular sex dreams (I seriously dream about looking up porn since I've quit porn...). Sometimes the pillow is being the victim of my nightly adventures, other times its just the matress itself. I do sleep with underwear on, but that actually makes it worse some times.

Now the problem started to evolve when I got into a relationship a year ago. While spooning my girlfriend (now ex) she functioned as my "second pillow". I actually started humping/grinding her during my sleep. Nearing the end I would always wake up, slightly confused. Like you say: my mind is foggy. I am there, but not fully aware yet. At first she thought it was funny, but having your leg being grinded on for some time, a few times a week might get annoying. I actually needed to sleep with a pillow in my arms again to make sure I wouldn't wake her up with my nighttime adventures. She always joked about the "poor pillow" but it was getting frustrating.

Even worse, when I dream about having sex I can make myself orgasm in my sleep. I am quite conscious during my dreams and can steer them anyway i'd like (really nice not to have nightmares for years in a row). Two or three months back I noticed that during my sleep I always stop before I orgasm (in the dream). Real orgasms during your sleep feel like peeing, and since I've build this brake to not pee in my dreams, I subconsciously avoid it. So for a change I tried finishing for the fun of it.. Well I have on command wet dreams now. I do wake up shortly after (mostly to actually check I didn't piss myself), but it's so confusing. It only happens when I dream about sex, which is often and only if I'm actually having sex in the dream, which is less often. If I do wake up right before I orgasm I am on the edge of exploding. This foggy state of mind makes masturbating really tempting.

Hey there, was just checking out the site & have been meaning to register anyways, since I've been posting a lot on the Reddit page.

At any rate, OP's question inspired me to finally register here, in order to say that, yes, this has happened to me at various times. It's never been conscious at all, and I've always stopped the second I woke up. But really, this goes back to high school for me.

I posted a very long post about this on the sub-reddit, and it hasn't happened in a couple months now. Maybe my body is finally adjusting to the NoFap lifestyle (currently on day 96).

Here's the link to my post about this (very similar to yours, OP) & hope this you well:
