Over recent months I have been practicing fasting from food for health reasons.
I have learned a few things from this that apply to the NoFap challenge:
    1. Cravings do go away: we all know that at times it feels like cravings are insurmountable. But they do go away. The more I come to understand how my mind works the more I see that cravings are manageable.
    2. Practice is important: we won't get this right the first time, but we need to become skilful at managing the urges.
    3. Willpower gets better with practice.

I hope this helps. Does anyone else have similar experiences and learnings?

I have also done fasting from food for up to 24 hours, and it helps my spririt get in touch with the fact that the body isn't necessarily in charge. I have also fasted from marital sex for 30 day periods, during which my wife and I experienced amazing healing.

Yes, I am practicing intermittent fasting.
The longest I have gone is 24 hours, but I am thinking about doing a 3 day fast.
There are a number of health benefits, but I actually find it very interesting that after getting through t he cavings, I have a sense of mental sharpness and energy which I didn't expect. This is what many medieval monks and others with a religious motivation have experienced over many centuries.

Hey guys, just wanted to say something regarding fasting in terms of religion for me. I'm not preaching here, just telling you the spiritual experience I gain from fasting. A lot of cultures use fasting as a tool in aiding their spirituality. I think all of these cultures/religions have something we could work with.

As some of you many know Muslims fast for a month (30 days not eating from sunrise to sunset) in a month called ramadan. I Here's a few things about it

    1. We are told to abstain from any sexual behavior even if its with your wife or partner during those 30 days. It is a time of meditation, prayers and spiritual uplifment. It is believed that any lustful or sexual activities will cause problems in this enlightening process.

    2. We break our fasts with dates and water (or milk) - dates have been scientifically proven to increase blood flow, maintain electrolyic balance are a large source of fiber among other countless benefits. They basically jump start your system at the end of a fast. Heres some info http://www.sowetanlive.co.za/goodlife/2013/05/08/dates-beneficial-to-sex-life

    3. We are told to give charity. This is a time when the rich and poor are at one with each other as we have to feel the starvation that the poor feel due to lack of food. This could be linked in with the cold shower theory, the hunger for food could work to build your willpower and confidence

    4. It is a time when many muslims try to cut out bad habits such as drinking, smoking or eating junk food. It is a time when I try to get of fapping. I always go the whole month not fapping. I just never continue my streak sadly

    Hope you find this interesting

    Hi dodoz123
Thanks for your comments. I am genuinely appreciative to hear an Islamic perspective on this topic. As you rightly point out many cultures use fasting for spiritual purposes.
I am a Christian, but have learned much from eastern approaches to fasting and spirituality. But I also know there is a rich tradition among all of the Abrahamic faiths which we can all learn from.
    Thank you, brother.

    Hi Loren
You make a rally great point about fasting being about recognising that our bodies and their physical desires do not necessarily have to be in charge of our actions.

Another thing about fasting is what my whole congregation does voluntarily where health conditions allow, is everyone fasts from food for 24 hours once a month, and then we take a collection and donate the amount we would have spent on that food for people who are less fortunate whether they belong to our congregation/church or not. That way even if you don’t have much money, you can still help out in the donation. If you have the means, it is requested that you donate generously, even double, triple, or ten times the amount your meals would have cost. This really helps me think of other people and breaks me out of selfishness. The nofap effort for me is about shedding the selfishness and serving other people. There is not a more selfish act than looking at porn and pleasuring oneself.

This week is week 5 where I fast 24-26 hours one day of the week and then go to the temple the next day. It has been really really helpful. Self-control for the win!!!! I will do it for a long long time I hope :)
