One of the ways I plan on ridding myself of porn addiction is to educate myself on the terrible outcomes of sex trafficking, which is heavily tied to pornography production. Anyways, I figure this thread could be a good way to open the conversation!

My first google search leads me to Tim Ballard and Operation Underground Railroad. Super cool story and initiative started by a guy who had worked Homeland Security, but due to enforced governmental restrictions on his ability rescue children, he decided to leave and begin his own initiative.

    https://ourrescue.org/about#promise

I found a talk he performed at Google last year and it definitely opened my eyes to the issue. Below are some of the quotes I found most compelling/disgusting:
    • "The numbers are staggering... Over 5,000,000 children are forced into forced into sex slavery or slave labour, and over 2,000,000 are children forced into sex slavery"
    • "It's the most horrific plague to ever hit the earth, especially in our time.. and nobody knows about it"
    • "We have the ability to help... It's important that we see some of this darkness so that we can rise up, and we bring the light"
    • "Something this massive doesn't go away unless everyone rises up and says what can I do?... Get involved in some way"
    • "They are being sold on the internet.. through social media platforms"
    • "They are kind of cellular in structure... Selling 10-year-olds is another thing... It's safer for these organizations to work in smaller cellular groups... You can sell a 10 or 11-year-old girl for double, or more than you can an adult prostitute"
    • "Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal enterprise on the planet, why? because you can sell a kilo of heroin one time, you can sell a child 20-30 times a day for hundreds of dollars... It's much more profitable than typical trafficking contraband"
    • "There's more sex addiction today than maybe ever before, because it's a highly PORNIFIED world, and a lot of that leads people to take that to the worst degree, and get into child pornography... The amount of child pornography that gets distributed in the States each day, you'd be shocked... You have to ask yourself what kind of demand justified that number, how many sick people, a lot of them from this country are travelling and engaging in this"
    • "It's so profitable and there is so much demand"
    • "Sometimes the family is part of the problem, selling the child, thinking that this is better, they're tricked ya know"
    • "There's a lot of damage psychologically that need to be undone, they've been rewired thinking they're a commodity, they're an object to be sold"
    • How big is the problem in the US? "It's bad... but there are over 200,000 children forced in the commercial sex trade here in the USA... 8000-10,000 children are smuggled in each year, forced into the commercial sex trade"
    • "This guy came up to me, called himself Fuego... What do you guys want?... I dunno what do you guys sell here?... Well one of the things on my menu for you is 11-12 year-old girls"
    • "These traffickers were pretending to host a modelling school... They were using a semi-famous beauty pageant queen who would go to the houses and offer scholarships... They'd bring them into the 'school' and slowly desensitize them... take this porn video you just watched, your going to go and do that with this American man who's in the other room"
    • "This is the beginning of the war... so long as there is a demand, and there is a HUGE demand for children in sex"
    • "To combat it we need to overwhelm these traffickers and our numbers aren't big enough yet"
    • Craigslist add "This car is 12 years old, it has 0kms on it"
    • "We've assisted in the arrest and prosecution of over 280 traffickers... That's a lot of people who in jail for a long time"

There are a number takeaways to take from this talk. First, I noticed that the healing process that is provided to these abused children is similar to the healing process for us porn addicts. On the positive, it is about rewiring the brain and taking steps in the right direction in terms of pursuing passions or interests. Second, I found it pretty sad that the same thing that is responsible for mass porn addiction is the same mechanism that sex trade relies on, the internet. Obviously there are positive to the internet, as it can be used to raise awareness, and in this case, develop programs and strategies to take down sex traffickers. Or for engaging in platforms like NoFap, obviously :) However, my fear is that due to the vastness and lack of regulation of the internet that people will continue to use it for terribly wrong reasons. Third, is that this is a very real issue and that it is indeed linked to pornography, with pornography being one of the ways to 'desensitize' child sex slaves, as well as pornography contributing to the sexual objectification of vulnerable populations, creating a need. The ease of access to pornography, which in my opinion is largely aided by the creation of smartphones, creates an insatiable demand, to which there will be a supply. Basic Economics. In a world motivated by capitalism, it becomes increasingly difficult to stand against those in roles of power, or those who recognize a profitable opportunity. As mentioned in Tim's talk, the only way this issue can be combatted is through mass backlash. I am left asking what role I can play in taking a stand against child sex trafficking, I guess acknowledging that it is a real issue is an important first step. I plan to watch Tim's movie "The Abolitionists" sometime this week to continue my education, the trailer can be accessed below!

Please leave comments providing additional knowledge and perceptions on the issue! Perhaps we could use this forum in some way to contribute to the fight?!

A most useful way to prevent porn viewing. Knowing that many of the "stars" of porn are forced into under horrible circumstances, makes it almost as reprehensible to watch as it is to make it in the first place.

Thanks for the post. I found it very helpful. I also liked that you did some research.

    Hi,
It really is so sad to learn that this is so big really !
Children are the future of our societies and of the world ! They should be spared from such horrible experiences, it's just disgusting to see how they are treated and abused for
money... How can people even be so cruel towards another person, especially to kids ??
Their lives are destroyed before they even started, i hope the people who commit such crimes will be caught and taken to jail for life !
@BrandNewGuy : thank you for posting this, it makes my disgust for p even bigger, and my fight against pmo more vigorous.

Its 2017 and we "homo sapiens" are calling ourselves the most intellectual beings.
The saddest thing is that almost everything is modernizing en evolving except this evil, cruel and barbaric tradition, slavery.

Not only is this tradition still practiced, but it also evolved and become more extreme and intense then ever before.
Our leaders should be ashamed, deep ashamed. We as a community have also failed hard and we will bear the consequences of this.

The good things is that people like you are making more awareness for these unheard voices. I thank you for that! Keep up the good work for no matter how little that seem it's huge!

In a room full of darkness even the smallest light can provide guidance.

  7. @BrandNewGuy I've seen a similar documentary called 'Nefarious, Merchant of Souls' which i found eye opening too. It's all too easy for people to get wrapped up in their lustful persuits and especially treat internet porn as some kind of free for all where the most degrading and inhumane content is just a few clicks away if you know where to look. Adult porn has definitely become more graphic and more violent and extreme in recent years and the other troubling thing is the sexualisation of childhood which in places like Japan is something of a cultural phenomenon. I remember learning about it in another documentary on BBC called 'Young Sex For Sale' by Stacey Dooley in which men regularly visit coffe shops/bars in Japan to pay and talk to a young teenage girl, very weird and disturbing. In one scene she interviewed a man (if you can call him that) who was so warped with his view of children he wore pig tails, had childrens items in his room etc he basically lived his life like that, this wasn't like a diry little secret, he walked about like it. He seemed mentally disturbed, properly away with the faries. It can't be right to let someone live like that without getting them sectioned and offered psychological help to help reduce or eliminate any risk they pose to children, obviously if they aren't receptive to treatment and are clinically insane, then they should be kept away from general population, even if they haven't yet committed any crime..

That person is an extreme case, but men every day are being arrested for looking at illegal content and i believe the most common reason is because they have developed such a deep perversion over years of self abuse and porn abuse that the old vanilla adult stuff doesn't have the same effect. I think certain groups of people are more susceptible to stepping over the line than others and that doesn't make the behaviour any more acceptable or take responsibility away from the criminal but i think a lot of these kind of 'online viewing' crimes are preventable if people had a better understanding of how online porn can affect an individuals behaviour and that help is available if you think things are getting a bit out of control.

I fully agree people in roles of power can do some fucking terribly unethical things and often do. Thanks for the encouragement!

I will check out the documentaries you talked about! The story about the man in Japan is very disturbing indeed. As for the quote, I myself began to watch more extreme porn, Pierre Woodman par example.. It really fuckin sickens me, but for some reason got me off. I think what got me off was that the girls, for the most part, seemed very very into it. Acknowledging this really shows me the direct impact porn has had on my objectification of women, something that has robbed me of sharing an intimate connection.
