Hi guys, I am a 8+ year porn addict who was raised in a christian home and had used my religion to be my main motivation for breaking that addiction. I was protestant until recently I was learning towards orthodoxy. The daily routines/ prayers/ icon veneration were helping to keep me focused and I was doing 20+ day streaks as long as I was keeping focused on religion. Problem is now I have had a change of heart towards Atheism after reading the Old Testament in depth along with some Christopher Hitchens. Now that I have no religion I am struggling with motivation and can't seem to get past 3 days without pmo. Its not even like I am fighting it, I just don't care as much. But at the same time I know I NEED to quit because of the side affects, and there is a cute girl at work I am wanting to ask out but really don't want to bring another woman into this struggle since the last 8 relationships failed because of depression caused by trying to break this addiction. When I get past 16 days I usually hit really really hard depression with constant suicidal thoughts and it is difficult to work. Before my faith got me through that. Now I have no faith, what can I do? Thoughts and suggestions.

Before you just abandon all faith I might suggest trying out a spiritual type study/practice? I mean it's totally up to you. Search 'spirituality psychcentral' on a search engine and you can find information as to why spirituality produces a myriad of benefits scientifically.

Who knows maybe your mind will change in the future and you will find a new faith or return to your family roots? Life is a journey wish you the best.

The problem is I have logically eliminated my families faith, and even if I was to join the Orthodox church I'm not sure I truly believe in the supernatural. I really have seen no evidence my whole life despite my desire to. I need something concrete ya know?

Yep I get you. I'd advise looking at proven benefits of spirituality unless you are like anti-spiritual lol?

I mean I can look into it, but even eastern spirituality or spirituality is something I am not sure about. Thank you for the recommendation though! I am looking more for like scientific method or something. I mean Humanism is great I am just not sure how to get the motivation

Or even philosophy I forgot to add.

Sometimes studying the teachings of great philosophers can help one to figure things out for themselves. If philosophy is still too much perhaps just dedicate yourself to positive and motivational content? You need some kind of positive wellspring in your life.

Philosophy is fine, since it is usually logic worked out into the imaginative. I am considering looking more into feminism and the abused associated with the adult industries.

I'd share links but I can't dammit. Once you get on the self improvement path you'll find your purpose eventually just try to keep a positive mental attitude through thick and thin :)

Interesting your obsession with Vikings as I've actually been slightly considering Asatru not because my complete belief in it or anything but because of the ancestral tradition.

This may be an amazing opportunity for you to rediscover your relationship with Jesus. Moving away from 'religiosity' and towards a genuine faith-centered lifestyle. It seemed that there were things that were working for you, but you were confronted by things that were opposed to your understanding of how the universe should be. Instead of entirely rejecting it, I'd encourage you to explore it deeper in a way most Christians never will and see if you can reach a broadband connection to the infinite.

You cited problems with the Old Testament. There's two main problems with the OT. Firstly, a lot of people take it very literally when actually it's full of metaphors and stories and poetry. Secondly, it's the written record of a group of people that were trying to figure out what exactly was going on in the universe and who this invisible god is. The OT by itself is flawed because it's not a true reflection in itself of God/universe/energy. But through the lens of Jesus, you see it as an unfolding narrative of people making errors and then gradually coming to see a physical manifestation of who God is.

Anyway, just some food for thought. For achieving nofap success entirely without faith, there's many people here who have led the way and will help you succeed. Best of luck!

  20. Hmm... I think you are selling yourself short if you stop at Christopher Hitchens. Check out some Nietzsche, Feurbach and Wittgenstein. They have a lot more substance than Hitchens and, unlike Hitchens, I think the criticisms they leveled against religionists have a lot of weight to them.

Also wanted to add here... becoming an atheist doesn't mean you can't be spiritual. There are atheistic religions (Buddhism and Taoism). In fact becoming an atheist can actually be extremely healthy in your spiritual journey, because so many times our thoughts about God or the ultimate reality become obstacles, idols, that prevent us from having direct experience of that spiritual core of all existence from which all religions arise. Hence why I think it is high time we apply the rigor of science to spirituality as well. Develop the right mental and psychological tools and, like looking through a microscope, you can have an intuitive experience of the the ground of all being that people call by different names... God, Tao, Emptiness, Void, the Unborn, the Kingdom of God, etc.

    Just some thoughts.
