Porn blockers

Discussion in 'Porn Addiction' started by R92B, Jan 24, 2016.

  1. Just wanted to share my sentiments regarding these as my opinion has changed in recent days.

I used to think that blockers weren't a great idea as they are easily removed and do not make abstainers strengthen their resolve/willpower and truly beat the addiction organically. Basically, I didn't think they're effective. I read a post last week about the "Cold Turkey" website blocker; and I had hit a desperate time in my recovery. Following several relapses I downloaded the programme and blocked every porn website there is for a year.

Today, I had massive urges and probably would have relapsed if the Cold Turkey programme wasn't so robust and arduous to remove. I did a quick google search and there are a tonne of people begging for help to get their websites unblocked. Uninstalling the programme doesn't work, and only a lengthy data encryption technique will actually stop it.

Short of doing a system restore (which I would never do because I need all of my laptop's stored content), I am stuck in Nofap whether I like it or not. My computer skills are basic to moderate at best so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to remove it even if I wanted to.

TL;DR - If you're really struggling, and cannot see yourself going to extreme lengths to remove this stubborn porn blocker, then get it and let the days rack up.

    Hope this helps someone.

If it works for you, great! For me, they were not very helpful, because there are so many run arounds. I wish you much success!

Porn blockers are only one tool in the arsenal against pornography. Nobody is required to use them and they are not impossible to bypass, but for some people (myself included) porn blockers are way better than no protection and having porn just one click away.

Its always better to keep something as oppressive and damaging as porn is to us at an arms length regardless of how strong willpower is IMO. I will always use blockers. I am on the recovery path nearly three years now and am currently on my longest PMO streak in that time, but I know that at some stage in the future I will be prone to relapse and I will never be cured of this addiction. For my maintenance of staying PMO free I need blockers as a last bastion of defence when I am feeling at my lowest and feel like ruining everything. I am so grateful for K9... its helped stop me from relapsing on plenty of occasions. I haven't tried cold turkey before does it only block websites are does it also block categories??

I agree that porn blockers are only post of the equation, but I think they are important. For me or like a seat belt. I mean I should just be a good driver but sometimes accidents can happen. I could be distracted while driving or some other driver could hit me and I have no control over that. My pmo addiction is the same thing. Sometimes my will power is low or sometimes I am not even looking for pmo but something triggers the craving. It could be a pop up ad or s TV show.

For someone like me who is too tech-savvy for his own good, porn blockers are useful, but they do not prevent me from watching porn. They only delay a relapse.
