ocd

  1. Sounds rough! I’m glad I don’t have OCD but I can sympathize with having a disorder. It’s interesting, the longer I live the more I realize that we are all born with natural gifts and natural weaknesses or even disorders. I’m really good at fixing things. People are constantly amazed at my abilities but I don’t think twice, it just comes naturally to me. I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD by a couple of doctors and a few psychiatrists (because I needed second and third opinions). I struggled in school but I fought through it and ended up graduating with an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. I still have to take medication for it or I would lose my job. I can’t just make myself “focus”. The medicine acts exactly like a pair of glasses for me - I can be productive with it and I’m a disorganized mess without it. What makes it hard is all of the false diagnoses that happen and the fact that people only associate the disorder with children that act hyper in class at school. My mind can’t calm down on its own. I’m finding that meditation helps as well. I try to never use ADHD as an excuse to underperform. I hold myself at a higher standard. There are advantages to ADHD - I’m a very creative person and I am solid in high pressure situations. I’m able to solve problems by thinking outside of the box.

  2. are you sure its not your personality type instead of adhd?

  3. Never a dull moment in the head reminds me of a Vietnam Vet’s POW story. He had to spend most of his years there in solidarity, nothing at all in his cell. He said he’d spend his time imagining elaborate plans. His example was building his dream house room by room. He used his imagination often during that time. It helped him survive without going stark raving mad.

I think a good imagination is an under rated trait. It has lead to people creating useful and beautiful things for society. And it may very well save a person’s life in a dangerous situation.

  4. I’m also convinced that just because we don’t think and act like everyone else doesn’t mean that we are disadvantaged. Yes we have to fit in with society but the world needs people like us to fulfill specific purposes.

  5. i have a very vivid and active imagination, my ocd only amplifies my thoughts.

  6. Could be. I try not to label myself. The medication makes a big difference though so who knows.

  7. well aslong as it helps you i suppose it does not matter, honestly if i could get rid of my ocd i dont think i would, i feel like things would be boring without it.

  8. Exactly!

If everyone in the world only knew how to paint beautiful paintings there wouldn’t be anyone like yourself to build the edifices where they can be displayed.

  10. We play the hand that we are dealt. And we play it to the best of our ability. I’m grateful for both my talents and my weaknesses. They make me the person that I am.

  12. i would say my worst ocd thing affecting me right now is blasphemy thoughts, i always feel like God is judging me and every wrong thing i do will damn my soul eternally, heck just typing that made me think, what if i will go to hell for typing "damn my soul eternally" like its not like im asking for that by typing it. So yah things like that annoy me a lot.

  14. i find the best way to fight ocd and overcome things is by doing what you dont want to, say your ocd is telling you to touch something, dont do it, fight it and it will weaken, over time if you apply this to everything than you will forget you even have it.

I'm pretty sure I don't have OCD, but when I found this thread, this was exactly what I thought of. I have exactly the same issue. I do not know what is so special about the multiples of five, but they are the only numbers I can choose without cringing.

  17. Around the time I became addicted to porn I started checking locks a lot. I also had this idea of having to move to the left or to the right of things if I wanted to avoid certain catastrophies. It got really exhausting and thankfully, I eventually realized how pointless it all was.
