I'm reading "Your Brain on Porn" and many of the points have resonated with me. Particularly, the author discusses adolescence as a fundamental growth period for the brain and brings up the theory that instant gratification porn/tube sites can wreak havoc on sexual and mental development.

This all makes sense to me. Seeking instant gratification makes it more difficult to accomplish prolonged attention. You can see this immediately as an inability to focus, but over time more severe symptoms can develop -- depression, ADD, or ED due to excessive porn use.

As it pertains to ED, it makes total sense to me because I have experienced it too. It starts with an escalation of porn viewing habits because the simple stuff doesn't get you off anymore. Then your brain becomes so trained to having instantly stimulating (and increasingly intense) material that you can skip through, rewind, close and open at will, that normal romance and physical contact doesn't quite do it any more.

So in trying to break free from porn and cure ED and all the other symptoms, it makes sense to stop viewing porn and beating it off. BUT what about all of the other habits which we have today -- outside of porn -- that subject the brain to the same patterns??

Instagram is the first one that comes to mind, and yes, my feed is full of big titty tattooed women. But not because its basically soft core porn -- because it is an endless stream of potentially stimulating information that works in the same ways as tube sites on my brain.

What about Spotify? Having every song ever at my fingertips so I can skip and browse and hear whatever I want exactly when I want it.

What about smoking pot? Can I use this as a reward after a day of not viewing porn? Or is using pot only preventing my neurotransmitters from resetting in the ways they need to help with all of my symptoms?

I'm no neuroscientist, but I am curious about the prevalence of instant gratification in media and culture today, and wonder if a cure is possible when these other outlets exist and affect the brain in the same ways.

i think these are just distractions. like the mind cant be bored and would rather prefer to do something unhealthy than get bored. that's why we have facebook and youtube and porn.

even nature doesnt let vacuum exist. but there are other sources of dopamine. i have grown plants and at times it feels good to look at them and see how they've grown.

i visit fb but have only 4 friends, so there's not much over there.
