Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has practiced mindfulness to help cope with their porn or masturbation addictions and whether it's helped?

I've found mindfulness useful in that it helps me to be more aware of my actions and thoughts that precede a porn/masturbation/webcaming binge. This awareness gives me a better "ownership" of what is happening with me, and the space it creates allows me to make a better decision, rather than just an automatic response in turning to porn etc for some sort of detached soothing. By better decision, I mean do something else with the energy,.. like journal, or read others thoughts on NoFap, get some exercise, switch off the computer, etc. The desire can still be very strong, but I find I can allow it to be, with a minimum of struggle as I get on with other things.
I must admit I also have times where I find mindfulness difficult to maintain, and I easily fall into forgetfulness.
    Good luck with your challenge.

I have found it does help. My relapses came about when I stopped being mindful. And with a vengeance too. I like to think of porn addiction as mindfulness training. Becoming more aware of your body, your urges and your own patterns of behaviour is surely a huge step to achieving inner peace! I think the greatest achievement anyone can make is achieving a full state of inner peace and discipline despite massive urges and cravings to do otherwise. Have you found it's helped?

I haven't used it before to cope with my addiction, it's more something I've used for social anxiety which I significantly recovered from because I constantly practiced it. With social anxiety I realised many of my thought patterns were so instinctive that I didn't know what I was anxious about in certain situations. I think it would be a similar thing with porn or a masturbation addiction, where you're so used to thinking about it that it's evolved into an instinctive thinking pattern. Practicing mindfulness was an excellent way to slow down my thinking and become more conscious of it. I thought I'd share the notion of practicing mindfulness as a option to help anyone trying to give up. I'm only on my third day of giving up so I'm not really one to preach on solutions, but it might be worth trying. I know I will be.

I'm hoping to use it more so, hope it goes well for you.
