    Excuse my english...

After of several years, and I must say SEVERAL, of practicing M on a regular basis (nothing to be proud of) now I'm looking for restoration. During these last 23 days that I've been on a 90-day challenge, I've notice in my particular case that masturbation is the result of an undisciplined mind, I mean, along the day all kind of good and bad thoughts come into my mind, and even more, in the night right before going to sleep.

Thoughts come. They come from visual propaganda, music, radio, people, own desires (above all); I mean, it's totally normal, all the time we have something in our minds. Probably, I can't avoid bad thoughts come to me, but what I can avoid is to be subsequent and indulgent with those kind of thoughts.

When I stay so long in a bad thought, I'm feeding the 'monster of M', thoughts are energy for it. That's why I must replace thoughts. It's not only trying to avoid or trying to forget those thoughts, they must be replaced with new information, new thoughts. Sexual impulses are all above our physical body, when we have a long story of PMO (like me), our physical impulses are highly stimulated, so, what we may need is not only abstain or repress physical impulses but to increase and feed the spirit, the counterpart, in order that our thoughts and then our spirit impulses may be stronger than physical.

If we can control our thoughts we definitely would control masturbation. I must quote this phrase which has been a truth for me:

“You cannot keep birds from flying over your head but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair” -Martin Luther

Your English is perfect and would be extremely well written for a native speaker. This a deeply profound and insightful view on the situation. Thank you for sharing :)

Great insights. Your post can essentially be summed up by one of my favorite bible verses:

    Galatians 5:16
"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

Damn, I'm also in the 90 day challenge and I started on February 1st (I'm in Panama) but I'm doing something else, because I bought a manual on increasing testosterone in 31 days and in its pages it describes that my Genitals do not need air and this is the problem 'my penis grows (because I do not control it that way) and this motivates me again to the M interrupting the 90 day plan, because I have to restart because I just did it (M) and it is humiliating After the O.
It is a problem having to deal with the side effects of the PMO

Wow! Totally agree. Then, next verse complement the idea:
"For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want." (v. 16)

Thank you for your valuable opinion!

I know, dealing with PMO is NOT JUST a matter of will or decision, there's much more inside. It's about a deeply rooted tree, the practice of P or/and M are just the visible fruits of the tree. When we do not masturbate or watch porn, we are only pruning the tree that those bad fruits may not be visible, but the tree still there, it's just a matter of time that fruits appear again. Just like any other fruit tree we see in nature.

The problem is not PMO, that's just the result of a deeper problem which we have to deal with.

Very interesting. Could you go into more detail on this? What do you feel is the deeper problem and what strategies do you find effective for gradually uprooting such a strong tree?

This is a good discussion. As humans, we have an interesting nature because we have both natural / biological instincts and appetites. But we also have an intellectual / spiritual component to us. So there is a constant tension for us to master our urges for self-gain or pleasure in the moment and to live by intellectual principles and set ourselves up for true satisfaction by doing what is best for us in the long-term and developing meaningful relationships. This is a conflict that will never completely cease. We will get better at living a certain way by striving after it and practicing it.

"Watch and pray.. for the spirit is willing but the body is weak.."

I'm amazed! I couldn't summarized it better than you. You used that verse perfectly.
It is a lifetime conflict, the victory between our body and spirit will be defined depending on which of these two we invest more.

Well, in order that I may have more resources for fighting this battle, I've been doing research about the theme, asking myself 'What is the real problem?', 'the deeply rooted problem'. As I mentioned in the first post of this thread, thoughts influence our will, I wouldn't say thoughts are the root but I would say that replacing bad thoughts for good ones are going to damage the deep roots of the bad tree (that's part of my current strategy REPLACING THOUGHTS).

I'm still examining myself and doing research to get to the root of the tree, and I've found that PMO addiction, as any other addiction, lies in a LACK OF SPIRITUALITY. The more we feed our physical impulses, either visual stimulation or any other thing that OVERSTIMULATES our physical senses, the more our senses are going to be agitated and stronger demanding more stimulation to satiate these impulses. It's a vicious cycle.

That's why I say that feeding the counterpart, the spirit, is going to be a great advance in fighting against PMO or any other addiction. I' would like to address the subject in depth later, based on what I'm learning and experiencing (even when it's too soon to sing victory, I'm learning insights about the problem and solutions).

Definetely, cut down the tree will be a hard job of many years, and even when the tree is cut, the outbreak of new shoots must keep us alert. This is a lifetime battle, but I guess that we may reach control over our physycal impulses, better than being under the control of them.

Discipline builds character through good habits. If children are brought up right by their parents, if they are disciplined, they will get a huge head start in life. For those brought up in less than ideal circumstances, for the majority today, then they will have to strive to get there themselves through some form of self-discipline.

But consider that there is almost a conspiracy against discipline today in our consumption driven culture. Self-disciplined individuals do not make the best consumers.

Those words shocked me! You are right. It's a conspiracy.

  17. This is what the free market thrives on. Businesses wouldn't be successful if persons were disciplined.

  18. From mind control to spirituality to world of business. Seems to be a lot of theories. Any practical solution?

You don't know? I will tell you: Happiness is the practical solution.

In itself, the pursuit of happiness is vacuous. First you need to enquire what the Good Life is. Any happiness you may attain to will be due to building this, and it will be counter-balanced no doubt with some suffering. To pursue happiness, for its own sake, is usually just the pursuit of pleasure, or the escape from suffering. It's what led most people to pornography in the first place.
