Is 'bro' in any way a sexual or romantic thing?

OK, please give me a break if this is a stupid or naive question, but:

Is the "bro" terminology any kind of code for a sexual or quasi-sexual or romantic relationship? You know, a kind of a "down low" thing?

I ask, because it's not a terminology I'm overly familiar with personally. My buddies and I don't call each other "bro." Maybe just a generational thing?

And then, the main reason is that I've consumed a lot of porn. Gay porn. And guess what? A lot of that plays on every sort of fantasy you can imagine, including -- you guessed it -- the notion that guys who are "bros" are secretly into each other...that way.

So I'm just wondering, and if I'm stupid, I can live with that. It wouldn't be the first time. Have at me!

Depends on context. It can mean brotherly love or it can be used in a competitive way, but it almost never used in an erotic way.

Bro is literally "brother" and almost never means anything inappropriate in day to day context.

Perversions can be applied to nearly any sphere of life. Expose to child porn has been known to encourage paedophilia; exposure to beastiality has been known to promote thoughts appropriate to that field as well, etc. The trend is general and concrete.

A simple "cure" in my opinon would be for you to use the "bro" terminology yourself and grow accustomed to and comfortable with it.

(Or to avoid it altogether ofc. But some people may still refer to you that way so you can't really hide from it.)

    Good luck!

    Bro ;)

I've never heard of it being used in a sexual way before. It's probably just a porn thing.

Like the others^, I have never heard it used in this way. I always take it as a variation on mate; buddy; pal; or friend.

  7. I sure hope not.

  8. Basically what everybody else has told you. It's a term that's short for "brother" and well... nobody sane has sex with their brother. Also related to the phrase "brother from another mother", you typically use it towards a guy you consider your brother.

I think you asking this question is just an example of media shaping (in your case, at least somewhat) your outlook on the world. Which would reinforce everybody's goal here to limit just how much of it (especially porn) a person consumes. Hell, using the logic of porn, you can force yourself on a girl and there's a chance she'll actually like it, but I digress.

Probably more of a regional thing. I’m in California and almost every guy I know (old and young) refers to their friends, family, co-workers, etc as “bro” and there’s nothing sexual about it. *shrugs*

  10. I only use the word bro sarcastically because theres no way I'd use it seriously :b neither the word sis.
    I don't like them.

  11. I think it depends on the society where you are using it. For example in my society we use bro and sis as a part of appreciation.

  12. People call me bro. I hope they don't see me sexually lol.

Some people make a little extension on this. Like.. for example..

Hey @Septimus, I love your ponderous heart so much I just want to hug you and hold onto this wonder you've got inside you bro, no homo.

Just in case you think there could be confusion, you can tack on "no homo" as part of the bro-code-lingo.

Btw, that example was a true example bro. Really do love these questions you are asking :)

I never in my life heard or used the phrase “bro” as a romantic gesture. In fact the thought of it being a romantic gesture never crossed my mind until this thread.

  15. I use the word "bro" directed at others on a daily basis. I've never used it in a sexual context.

But I'm straight and only call dudes "bro" bc girls aren't a "bro". I've accidentally called "girls" "bros" when I'm having fun w them and it slips out. They start off confused but I think say fuck it.

Its very similar to how assholes call strangers "buddy" except "bro" isn't degrading. It just means "brother". So sometimes if im talking to somebidy and they tell me something ill say "heard bro" or "heard brother". Same thing.

    I appreciate the replies.

@DeservedCriticism made the point above: this is what porn can do. Lots of it is all about how that fantasy of yours can really happen! (Not! Of course.) So with straight porn, of course that girl will love it if you... And with gay porn, of course two buddies secretly...or will eventually...

As I said, it's just terminology I'm not accustomed to, and wanted to check. Thanks.

  18. 'Bro' is basically a way to foster goodwill by calling your fellow man 'brother,' but without sounding like a religious fundamentalist.

I don't think it's gay, just really lazy, like when you call everyone "buddy".

  20. All I know is that when I do some grass, I'm calling everyone bro lol.
