I don't like the word fap

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by JohnnyTheFox, Feb 3, 2014.

  1. I am not expecting much support in posting this, but I really feel like I want to say this: I don't like the word fap. Apparently, fapping is an onomatopoeic euphemism for masturbating.

First, I don't make a noise when I masturbate. In the thousands of solo masturbating clips I have watched I have never heard the sound, 'fap or fapping'.

Secondly, why use a euphemism when we have a perfectly adequate word. Euphemisms are often used so that people are not confronted with the real issue. Surely, on this sort of site, we need to face the demons of masturbation and/or pornography addiction. There is no need to rename it.

This brings me to a related point. I am not in favour of using initials instead of the words themselves. The most frequently used example on this site would be PMO (pornography; masturbation; orgasm). All of us have spent years (perhaps decades) pursuing our clandestine addictions. Surely, here and now is the time and place to become more direct and open about what we are doing. When we see PMO enough, although we know what it relates to, we could forget what it actually is. Any constructive feedback is welcome. Thank you - vertigo.

I definitely agree about the word "fap". It seems to make light of the situation. I can't imagine coming clean to my significant other about my decade long addiction and telling her I joined "nofap" with the expectation that she take it very seriously. That being said- the name is a lot more catchy than other sex addiction groups out there and it seems to draw attention from across the board from serious addicts to more occasional users.

The PMO thing also irks me a bit. But I suppose this is a forum, and the nature of forums is to come up with abbreviations for words that are frequently used on them.

Either way, glad something like this exists and has appeal to a lot of young men who aren't sure where to turn.

  3. Thank you for your feedback today. Yes, "fapping" implies something inconsequential compared to masturbating. The acronym, "PMO", seems to be a consequence of "text speak", yet we have no constraints on this site.

I'm from Poland, and in my country "fap" is very funny, it's not being use as a word :D it's just funny description. In my language we have descriptions for fapping, which are unusual :D hit the horse, squeeze the pear, hit the German on the helmet (no offence, that's only name), grab the pipe :D so it's even better to say FAP, than something from this collection :D

Here in Brazil we say "descabelar o palhaço", which means "to mess the hairdo of the clown".
About the word "fap", used in the title of the website, I think it has to be this way. The site is visited by different kinds of people, who have different ideas and lifestyles. Atheists, christians, sceptics, everyone can have benefits by reading the forum.
If the forum would be called "Stop Masturbation Now" or "United Against Porn", some of us would not believe the scientific ideas that encourage us to avoid high speed internet porn.

    Haha thats really funny :D

btt: i use the word 'fap' and 'PMO'/'MO' just because im a very lazy person and its shorter ;)
everyone knows what is meant and everyone here knows the significance of these terms. (im pretty sure...)

  8. Thank you for your contribution - that is extremely funny, Tom! But I still think that the word "fap" is too casual for something so serious.

Still it's better than facing direct name of it. I know it's serious, but taking it too serious will bring obsession about this.

  11. "Fap" means: "drunk" according to the Collins English Dictionary. So, using "fap" instead of masturbate is quite new and originates from the Japanese. You say, "everyone knows what is meant and everyone here knows the significance of these terms". Actually, I didn't know what it meant when I first came here a couple of months ago - I had to look it up. I eventually found it in this list: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wikisaurus:masturbate

You are likely younger than me, so you are probably used to abbreviating everything when you send a text message to save money. Anyway, thank you for taking part in this thread.

  12. This is an issue I addressed in my opening post on this thread: "Secondly, why use a euphemism when we have a perfectly adequate word. Euphemisms are often used so that people are not confronted with the real issue. Surely, on this sort of site, we need to face the demons of masturbation and/or pornography addiction."

  13. Actually, I take the opposite view. It is the use of the correct word masturbation, rather than a euphemism, that gives more credibility to the neuroscience underpinning this lifestyle change. Nevertheless, thanks you for the anecdote about the Brazilian idiom "to mess the hairdo of the clown"!

Maybe this is stupid, but my mom always told me to laugh at problems or fears, turn them onto jokes, and this is better way to deal with them. If I named it directly for all the time, I'd think about it day and night. It's own choice of everyone in here how to name it or how to deal with it. I respect that you want to face your demons by your way :)

  15. That is not stupid. You are right, we all have to find the most effective way that works for us personally. I respect everyone here for having the balls to aim for something so honourable, yet so difficult to achieve. My intention was not to start a campaign to challenge the name of the site or anything. I was just curious if anyone else felt the same as me. Congratulations on your clean week by the way :)

You have a point, but you are forgeting how most religious people use to address the issue. I am myself a Christian, but I never try to impose my moral views upon others. The names I cited sound like websites created by religious (or "preachy") people, and it tends not to atract people that does not share the same faith/values. Someone could find a name that could sound "scientific" without sounding "religious", but I just can't imagine what name would it be.

  17. I am also Christian, but I did not think of the point you make here. Interesting... thank you.

If humoristic words like this would'nt exist I wouldn't be on this forum because it is more a challenge for me and others that a serious addiction problem so we don't want to go on sites like:
    P-addiction.com
or stuff like that because only through the name of the site we don't want to recognize that the problem is serious.. You see what I mean?
