HOW HABITS WORK

    1. CUE
    So for us porn-addicts, it can be various things from boredom, to loneliness, avoidance, or sadness. What's your cue?

    2. ROUTINE
    Everyone has their quirks when fapping but ultimately we have the same goal in mind. It's an automated response. The more severe your addiction, the more of a reflex it becomes. Your body has learned this behaviour and it's doing it because it detected a previous pattern. Sometimes you don't realise how quickly you reacted until it's over.

    3. REWARD
    The sensation of climax. Let's be honest, it feels good. That's why we do it. But like every habit, the feel-good factor diminishes over time. That's why the smoker smokes more, the fast food junkie eats more and the drug abuser gets stronger substances, because the reward wears off. So we repeat the cycle or make our routine more thrilling. It's a bottomless pit.

    HOW TO BREAK A HABIT?
    There are opportunities to break the habit at every stage. It's easier said than done but the easy way in life leads to longterm hardship. Hence the hard way in life leads to longterm ease. It's difficult now, but it'll get easier.
    • Develop self-awareness. It's only by being conscious of your actions and behaviours that you can start do something about it. Start detecting your cues now.
    • The next time you're alone or bored, decide to do something different. Re-wire your brain that loneliness will now lead to calling a friend or your boredom will now lead to going for a walk. Don't think too much about it, just do it immediately. Make it become a reflex.
    • If you end up fapping... then pause mid-way (this is tough). Again, don't think too much about it, just stop abruptly and don't allow yourself to 'finish'. Imagine if a smoker only smoked half a cigarette, or the junk food fiend only had half a pizza? They'd be halfway through their recovery by this action alone. I tried this a couple of times and it worked. Eventually I got to a point where I would watch without touching myself. Then that became not watching at all.
    • State it's vulgarness. Whether you do this in your mind or you do this aloud - before you click on those thumbnails, tell yourself it's disgusting. Remember when you were a kid? You were grossed out by kissing and the idea of intimacy. Channel that inner kid and tell yourself that porn is nasty. You managed to convince yourself it was addictive, so you can also do the opposite. It doesn't take long for an ex-smoker to admit that the smell of smoking is disgusting once they've eradicated it from their system. So attempt that use of language now.
