How can you improve or change your self if you don't know it?

There's plenty of talk about changing habits, both quitting bad ones and starting good ones, but is that all we understand the self to be? A bundle of habits?

I think it's time we talk about this directly, and that is if we our-selves are going to change we should understand it, as the old inscription at Delphi says.

Maybe this takes the form of psychology or spirituality, whether a formal study or an informal one, regardless the subject of course is ourselves.

So strictly speaking, all the stuff we do are kind of peripheral, it's maybe life improvement but not necessarily self improvement.

And a good note to start on may be there is often some commentary/judgement on other selves by would be experts and amateur therapists and the like, but how about themselves? Somehow that's often not addressed and yet we're supposed to understand that self has insight into other selves? (wild guess which post I'm thinking about)
