Good Books?

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by Deleted Account, Jan 8, 2017.

  1. Recently I've been getting into meditation and spirituality. I was wondering if people have any good book suggestions? Also I've been thinking of taking transcendental meditation classes over the summer, anyone learn the art and care to talk about their experience?

"Be Here Now" Ram Das. Lots of practical skills you can apply and some inspirational stuff that fit right into this eternal struggle!

I read a few books by Hermann Hesse, including Siddhartha, and my favorite is Demian. The plot is quite similar (young guy venturing out in search of himself, failing and finally finding himself), but I found it to be more intense. That could be my personal taste, of course, but it might also be more authentic since Demian is about a German guy, not an Indian, and Hesse himself was German, so...

The original Eastern religious texts like the Daodejing or the Bhagavad Gita are always recommendable, too.

I have yet to read Demian, but a trusted friend told me it has plenty of self-improvement goodness in it. I'd keep my eyes peeled for that one.

@Headspace, Demian is one of my favorite books too. I don't suggest to friend because the teachings of Demian some times is very subversive and against to religion and for someone to just start a spiritual search maybe is a problem.

Alright, there certainly is some truth in that statement.

Well, you have religion/dogma, and then you have spirituality. The two don't have to intersect.

Just bought Being Mortal by Atul Gawande- should be a quick read, but he's a great writer. Next will be The New Jim Crow and then White Trash

Have you ever read "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran? If not, I would check that out! Very short read, and would possibly help you out on your spiritual journey! I was an English major and am constantly reading all types of stuff. Feel free to message me for any book suggestions!

Meditation is the opposite of addiction. It increases our focus, creativity, and our ability to stay present with all the negative emotions that used to send us running to pornville.
