  1. I am commencing university right now and it is a four year degree. But I will never subscribe to Netflix and this is why.
    It encourages escapism
    It is addictive
It does not keep you fit
I need to spend money on important things

When I study I will already be spending so much time sitting and just decroding away without excercise. So in my free time I will try to get my heart pumping, keeping me happy, healthy, and prepared to tackle yet more study head on. Sadly all the students I know choose to be too obsessed with Netflix. In moderation it's fine and I don't think it is always bad or harmful. But I'm just not gonna risk it. I have a history with digital addiction :p.

Ps I am prepared for any vehement disagreement you might have.

Hmm. Are you prepared for any vehement agreement I might have?

Seriously, mate, I think this is a good call. Further/higher education is fine, but far too many students seem to spend an inordinate amount of time, effort and money in vacuous pursuits. Obviously, you are not going to waste your time on edging and porn! But it's also important to be aware of other traps. You have the sense to know what your inclinations are and to strategise accordingly. Generally, I think film and TV viewing can be a massive waste of time and other resources.

Your point about healthy alternative is sound also. There is no doubt that exercise can enhance mood and refresh the mind for academia. Also, you don't want to lose those muscles you have been developing from labouring during the Summer. ;)

  5. Hey way to go! When I first started college, Netflix wasn't as popular as it is now. I've never kept a TV at college either --I felt like it would be distracting and I would be busy enough as it is (true). Seeing how common Netflix binging is I have no regrets in not having it. Now that I'm almost done... :D I probably will get it at some point. Netflix has original shows now that as an future TV writer I should know. I'll let you know if it destroys my life!

I think you are making a wise decision. Do h.s. kids today have the same problem, or is it just college?
P.S. If I do write for a Netflix show, please watch. Homework later, give-Flawed-Christian-money now ;)

  6. Way to go to you too. Almost done and no hours wasted watching Netflix. High school kids definitely do have it these days!! And if you create a show I would watch it :)

I broadly agree, however I did see a documentary on Netflix about our food culture (it's called Fed Up if anyone wants to check it out) which was the trigger to change my eating habits and has caused me to lose 3 stone. So I will always thank Netflix for that :p

I do agree that it can be potentially be addictive and mindless. You definitely can fall into the "one more episode" trap when watching series but there are lots of good series on Netflix. I get bored when watching for too long though and I only watch one series at a time so I do kind of limit myself. I do sometimes wonder whether I could have done something more productive with my time later though.

I would definitely say that if you can it's good to avoid it as well because there are also quite a lot of P subs there and there's no way to filter them out - they will sometimes just randomly pop up in a "Newly Added" or "Trending on Netflix" and that can be very easy to give into. Even some series that you wouldn't expect to be can be fairly pornographic as well.

In this regard I am very much like you... I completely stopped playing video games too. Sure it makes fun, but at the end of the day it is not what's important to me.
Escapism may be useful for some, but to me it sucks.
Have you read too, or was it gaming or tvseries?

Borrow it if you need to watch a show or two. I have looked at netflix and i know i would never 99% of the stuff on it.

  16. Is the other option NoFlix and Rage?

  17. I read books sometimes. They are a better use of time than screens I think.

Yeah true, but books too can transform into escapism in my experience.
