Hi guys. I'm an ex-opioid addict (6 weeks clean today) and I have a lot of experience in addiction and recovery. I'm trying to quit PMO and masturbation altogether for good. I found some techniques from SMART Recovery useful in kicking pills and I'm applying them to masturbation with some good results. Anyway, this is Day 5 or so for me no PMO. I do look at tasteful nudes, bikini models, stuff like that but nothing that gives me an erection. I find that looking at scantily clad women for a few minutes every day helps me find the motivation to keep going with this and my other goals. I'm here for support and to share tips.

Welcome to the forum. Tools from other recovery programs can work well with getting rid of PMO... what we have is an addiction and we need a plan in order to succeed. Feel free to start a counter for yourself and set some goals - short term and long term.

Just giving you a heads up concerning the scantily clad women pictures... looking at them can have the effect on you as looking at porn. We call them porn substitutes or p-subs. Getting a full blown erection is not a measure of how much you are being affected. The destructive, brain-altering damage we cause ourselves happens when we bathe our brains in massive amounts of dopamine when we PMO. Due to tolerance build-up we end up release dopamine in levels completely out of proportion to what is released during normal sexual activity. It causes measurable structural changes to the brain that must be healed.

Addicts also use these images to alter, medicate, sooth, numb, or escape from negative feelings. If you are looking at those pictures to give you motivation then you may be using them as a emotional crutch. You may choose to look at those pictures a stepping stone to recovery, but often those images aren't enough and our addiction craves something more stimulating.

I hope you are able to find the right forumua needed to make a success of your recovery.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking about cutting out the p-subs. Thanks for the warning. Thanks for the link DJ.
