Can loneliness cause physical pain?

Discussion in 'Loneliness' started by Deleted Account, Feb 5, 2019.

  1. I wonder if some of my aches and pains are due to loneliness. Is that possible?

It's possible. The loneliness is rooted in unresolved problems and conflicts in mind. It may be manifested as aches and pain across the body.

People can actually die from something called broken-heart syndrome. You betcha that loneliness can manifest itself physically.

No. Apart from something trivial, like a pain in shoulder muscles, if you get tense because you're scared of being in public (but that is a phobia, not just loneliness), the physical pain is caused by problems with your physical health. Consult a doctor.

Your mind is linked to your body intrinsically, if your psyche is not in order you may feel awful.

  6. More than physical pain it could cause the gradual degradation of our will to take care of ourself. I started reading 12 rules for life by psychologist Jordan Peterson. Its a good read and worth it not unlike many other motivation books out there. Have a go at it.

I wonder the same. I've been very lonely and depressed for over 6/7 years now and the chronic muscle pain i experience in my whole body, especially my legs, have only become more severe over time.

  10. I don't think loneliness can directly cause physical pain, but it can lead you to an unhealthy physical lifestyle, and that can lead to physical deterioration. Loneliness can ruin your motivation to improve yourself, and that is why it is dangerous.

Being realistic, unless you are consistently exercising your body, your body will be weak, and you will develop aches and pains due to muscle imbalances and other weaknesses.

Two enemies to your health have been identified: loneliness (mental state) and lack of physical exercise, leading to deterioration. You know what to do.

Yeah makes total sense. During my loneliness/depression i succesfully isolated myself from the world. Not wanting to socialize or move or do anything really. For a very long time it got so bad i only went outside once or twice for groceries. Not wonder my body deteriorated.

Been trying to reverse this for a long time now, its very hard.

It is, your mind can control your complete body functions, your gutt system can shut down and you could receive back bain/Problems with Nutrition absorbtion / Headache etc. Your mind is shaped by your emotions and thoughts and feeling lonely is pretty negative for your mind. I recommend the book "The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: How to be Calm in a Busy World" by zen monk Haemin Sunim.

  16. Yes because the brain processes sadness through the body.

Neurotransmitters, after the chemical processes, go into the bloodstream,

into the liver, and are excreted through the urine, sweat, saliva, and feces.

Once they are gone, my suggestion, is NOT to bring them back!

At the start I felt a sharp pain in my chest when I felt lonely, with time it became duller and duller until I forgot about it.

Yes, loneliness is like smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Read some research on that, which isn't the ultimate proof, but that's what I noticed with myself - I absolutely feel better when I'm around other people, where I have fruitful conversations and if they are not fruitful i wanna gtfo, but if i'm lonely I still need some socialisation now and then even with bullshit people - indirectly - like work, school etc.
