I've been spending copious amounts of time on the internet lately, especially since I quit my job.

I'm looking for tips or tools to help me limit the time I spend online. Obviously a good old fashioned notebook, watch or clock, and self-discipline would do the trick but in this day and age I feel the need to get fancy and keep it digital.

I was looking at the Time Tracker app for chrome, anyone use this or have any other recommendations for browser apps or PC software to help me not use the computer so damn much lol!?

I suppose just getting a job will solve the problem on its' own, haha!

It seems Time Tracker is the only app of its' kind for chrome. As much as I hate to say it, I've been on this site way too much today.

So Time Tracker will allow me to see how much time I am actually spending on a website, and I'll set myself a time limit of like 1 hour's worth of playful browsing per day. The app TrackingTime I will use for productivity and helping me track times I use the computer for work related stuff.

And so I've resolved my issue, but any tips or experience with limiting internet/computer usage is still greatly appreciated.

Another thing you can do is first make a list of what you're going to do online before you do it. And then stick to it, don't divert from the list. The items on the list should be specific, for example:

    Answer new emails
Read google news for 15 minutes
    Etc.

My phone was the main way I watched porn, as I'm too worried about getting viruses on my expensive laptop, but there didn't seem to be any proper apps for Android that could block porn.

What I use now is something called AppLock- basically you can choose which apps to 'lock' so you can't get at them without the passcode.

Using this, I locked the internet browser on my phone, settings, android market and my task manager so that i can't uninstall the applock.

I sent the passcode to a random email address i made so that i can't get a hold of it. It's working for me so far :)

  6. I am using a program called Cold Turkey. You define websites and/or local applications which you want to block, and then define which times of the day you want the blocking to happen. Personally I use it to block Reddit until 6PM-9PM.

  7. All kind of porn blockers are useless. YOU need to change, not your computer.

Was going to say the exact same thing. Porn filters can only do so much. The will, desire and drive must come from within. Just like how a crack addict will find crack no matter how many times they flush it down the toilet.

  9. That's exactly my reasoning behind it.
If I have the genuine will, then I don't need the blocker.
But if I don't have the will, then the blocker is useless. Becasue I will find my drug anyway, elsewhere.

Like an alcohol addicts who agrees to live in the hospital in a surveilled environment, but who still is hiding some small bottles in the sink.

This is great advice, my bookmarks bar is filled with unecessary links, links I just use for enjoyment. I'm sure I won't forget to visit these places even when they're not visible to me all the time lol.

Lots of good tips here, thanks everyone.

Will check it out, I don't use P blockers, they don't do anything for me, I just use AdBlock which is fantastic for filtering 'mind waste'. The blocking you are referring to is more of a moderation tool for general sites, I like it.

Ya I have a little notebook I will use this for. I've heard Mark Queppet recommend this before.

    The Reason

After thinking about it, I've come to the conclusion that I am definitely not addicted to the internet. It seems my reason for spending so much time online, on the sites that I do, is deeper than merely lacking self-control, although that is still part of the problem.

I have alot of great support in my life from people, alot of people who genuinely care about me and offer plenty of support and kindness. I've squandered and taken advantage of it alot due to my addictions, with the heart of all the addictions being PMO as messed up as that sounds, but I've dissected my addictions from a mental, neurological, and emotional level. PMO is at the heart of the helplessness.

Anyways, I spend so much time online because I feel lacking in relationships in real life. I'm actually an outgoing and sociable person, but my addictions have left me anxious, shy, and introverted. I'm introverted regardless I guess to a certain extent, but I still love to be social and crave deeply intimate relationships in my life. I guess that is what the heart of this problem is, I don't feel that I have the intimacy I want. I appreciate the genuine friends and people with wisdom offering me support in my life right now, but I yearn for a deeper intimacy with people that I am lacking right now. I also very much want to be in a romantic relationship with a woman, but I still have alot of work to do before I'm ready for that. Right now I'd probably only find dysfunctional women anyways lol.

And so I should probably focus more on my intimacy issues, and the rampant internet use which is mostly socializing around the web, will take care of itself.

    Lyrics to Digital Dirt :
    (Chorus)
None of this digital shit, I dont want it, I dont want it
I dont want to live with this, I dont want it, I dont want it

    (verse 1)
    yea, eh
    In-tel-tel-tel-tel-tel-tel
    Intel chip, new processor, flip-phone
Laptop, cable optic link (?), wi-fi zone
Instant message me, Ill hit you right back up
Electromagnetic waves got me jacked up
Cant think straight and my phone keep buzzin
The satellites aint right, its fuzzy my cousin
Ride around we go, Im so techno
I can download the globe in a second micro
Digital for real, she took a day half the pill
Now the babys get aborted we sit back and chill
On your man, out of sync, life flash by
See me stand up and think, planet earth cry
    Too satiated, Im over stimulated
Theres too many times now the mind is deflated
Wanna feed the need, walk around like a mummy
They say my belly full but my belly still hungry

    (Chorus)

    (verse 2)
your cell phones causing you to drive like an ass
to me thats not a good reason to almost die in a crash
plus I used to have numbers stashed away in my brain
now its all so convenient, cant remember a thing
but you could take a picture trick, and view it like you got it
at some my space 5 mega pixels thats a lot fast
so youre a rapper or a model now
so I dont have the options, stack up, back up
get your bottle (?) down, down ,down, down
before you strut your stuff for the net to see
lack of human interactions a bad recipe
    youre just a profile,
    glitch corrected (?), doped out
    on drugs and the food
    they keep you subdued
so theres remedies like silicon extremities
virtual sex, robotic pets, ghost writers keep your pens at ease
when fools catch wind of these, brain freeze,
it aint easy being analog whatever that means
    (chorus)

    (verse 3)
The last poet said they had a god complex
Wanna be the architects of reality avexed (?)
Billions on a space station in the projects
Baby Mamas feed seeds from their welfare checks
On the internet, children sit through the sex
    FBI monitor, message intercept
    (Im so high-tech)
Got the latest and the greatest
Once you outdated than you just cant fade us
Gotta get my botox, weed (?) and viagara
Just to get my rocks off, what happened to my stamina
So artificial you can call me R2
    D2, see-through, silicon fool

So when you see us on our typewriters, sending letters snail-mail
Rubbing sticks for fire, covered wagons, thats the tell-tale
    sign of contentment
    peace and enlightenment
Amp (?) cut that pro tunes (?) off, Im finished writing it
