Become a Superior Man by Turning Your Lust into Gifts

This is an excerpt from David Deida's The Way of the Superior Man, it has been helping me a lot to deal with cravings and temptations. It is biased towards men but I think all genders can benefit from reading this.

    Turn Your Lust Into Gifts
"When a man sees a beautiful woman it is natural for him to feel energy in his body, which he usually interprets as sexual desire. Rather than dispersing this energy in mental fantasy, a man should learn to circulate his heightened energy. He should breathe fully, circulating the energy fully throughout his body. He should treat his heightened energy as a gift which could heal and rejuvenate his body, and, through his service, heal the world. Through these means, his desire is converted into fullness of heart. His lust is converted into service. His desire is not converted by denying sexual attraction, but by enjoying it fully, circulating it through his body (without allowing it to stagnate as mental fantasy), and returning it to the world, from his heart.

If you are like most men, sexual energy tends to go directly to one of two places. Either your head becomes stimulated and you fantasize about being with a woman who turns you on, or your genitals become stimulated in lustful need. Your head and genitals, however, are just the north and south poles of the whole body. A superior man circulates the energy of arousal throughout his body, taking particular care not to let it stagnate in swollen fantasies or appendages. The purpose of sexual desire is creation. Reproduction is but the biological aspect of creation. As a man, you probably have much more to give the world than your children. Just as beautiful women inspire biological procreation, they also inspire artistic, social, and spiritual creativity. When it comes down to it, most creative men will admit that, one way or another, women are their muse and inspiration. Women bring them into the world. Women move them to create and serve humanity. In fact, some men would go so far as to say that, if it weren’t for women, they wouldn’t be interested in the world much at all.

If you are a man, you have probably found yourself inspired at some time or another by a woman. Such inspiration is usually temporary, because most men don’t know how to cultivate their relationship to the feminine. They tend to be inspired, and then spurt it out, through spasms of thought and ejaculation. Then they seek inspiration again, through more women, or through other feminine sources, such as alcohol, drugs, or nature. But if you learn to discipline your habits of building up and releasing mental and sexual tension, you can continually cultivate and magnify your inspiration. You can wean yourself from the addictive cycles of sexuality and intoxication. You can make use of the native force of sexual desire, for your woman and for other women, and convert your tendency toward fantasy and lust into the force of inspiration.

Feel lust. Feel what it really is, in its totality. Your lust reveals your real desire to unite with the feminine, to penetrate as deeply as possible, to receive her delicious light as radiant food for your masculine soul, and to give her your entirety, losing yourself in the giving, so that you are both liberated beyond your selves in the explosion of your gifts. This explosion of gifting could be the basis of your life, not just a moment of sexual yielding. When you feel sexual lust or desire for any woman, breathe deeply and allow the feeling of desire to magnify. And allow it to magnify more. Don’t let the energy become lodged in your head or genitals, but circulate it throughout your body. Using your breath as the instrument of circulation, bathe every cell in the stimulated energy. Inhale it into your heart, and then feel outward from your heart, feeling the world as if it were your lover. With an exhale, move into the world and penetrate it, skillfully and spontaneously, opening it into love. Through these means, allow women’s sexiness to help you discover and give your gift, rather than beguile you into cycles of stimulation and depletion".

This is more or less what I taught myself to do in hard mode and I am happy to see a good technique like this described effectively. This idea of turning sexual energy to good is pivotal for NoFap I believe, but is tough to convey in a practical manner.

One very cool aspect of this is that it doesn't take months before you can start to use it to help others. I am currently only three days out from my last MO but am in the exact situation described here. Physical urges accumulate very quickly in men. I am willing to bet there is a different way to describe the notion of PMO embedded in this thread. If you intentionally bifurcate and oversimplify the process a bit into the two sections of mental fantasy (or urges to view P for some) and physical urges, this sort of splitting of hairs may help some reboot participants to create an extra useful barrier between success and relapse.

Personally, I am in the unique situation that when I do this exercise, I believe I am at a point where 90% or more of it is represents physical urge (I hesitate to call it lust) for me with very little tendency toward fantasy. When I do have fantasy, it is more or less triggered by actual interactions with women who are also interested in and like me. I believe I can say that I have reached a point where I can sort of spread this energy and go out into the world. The tricky part for me is that, even after several months, having so much of that force still feels very uncomfortable to me and it appears to unintentionally shift my attentions and activities. i.e. I don't direct this energy well and it has had more than a few side effects (not all together bad). In sooth, there are quite a few times when this energy feels more like angst than anything and I believe that is one reason why I would do things like overeat under its 'spell' (if you will) and why I currently choose a sort of allocated MO idea to keep balance in my life.

@nfprogress I hear you mate. You seem like you have a profound understanding of how to manage this energy. My personal view is that truly understanding some of these principles in action, by living and applying them fully takes time and many mistakes and hiccups are encountered on the sincere path to their mastery. Regardless, having the knowledge and atleast demonstrating a willingness to try them out is laudable. All the best with your journey mate!

Hey @Alpinist! Good thread... do I detect Tantric undertones to all this or is it just my Gnostic fanaticism acting up again? :p

I was actually inspired to write Doctrine of Chastity when I was thinking happy thoughts of a girl I was smitten with, once upon a time. And before that, there was another girl who inspired me to write her a handwritten opus called The Handbook of Love and White Sexual Magic. (Which drew heavily upon Samael Aun Weor's The Perfect Matrimony, but did contain a fair bit of my own romantically-inspired material.)

Just trying to back up your point that sexual energy can be transmuted into the most wonderful type of creative energy. I only wish I were a better artist so I could illustrate my work. You don't feel inspired to draw or paint me a few Chakra diagrams, do you, by any chance?

P.S. nfprogress makes a very good point about how sexual energy can be misdirected through overeating, and, I might add, drugs, alcohol and of course porn. It's an unwieldy force and takes a skillful man to utilise it to best effect - a Shakespeare or a Beethoven, no less.

@J Scott Sorry for taking so long to reply brother... last week was a whirlwind!

Unfortunately I do not draw but I'm sure there are plenty resources to further your good work. I personally use Pixabay.com whenever I'm in need of royalty-free images. I suggest you go that site and just search for Charka/Chakras and you should get something worthwhile for free there. All the best with this!

Indeed, some of my best artwork (lyricism and poetry) was written inspired by a woman... And we can all relate. David deida ia having a profound impact on my growth. He's practices are very much in line with the Gnostic teachings yet he has a potent way of getting his message across to the modern man in the modern world.

How are your practices going - Pranayama, Meditation etc.?

@Alpinist, good to see you back, my brother in Gnosis. :)

My practices, apart from rigorous self-analysis and N.A. Step-work, have slacked off a lot. I stopped Mantra-writing once I got out of jail, but I want to be in a position to do Japa (verbal/mental repetition of the Mantra) and as such I am looking at getting my own place to do this in -- it's just not convenient here at the backpackers. Too many disruptions and people around. I need a quiet place where I can get up at 4am and do one Mala (or two) of Japa and then repeat the process at 9pm just before bedtime. I was actually able to accomplish this in an abandoned hut I was living in. I'm considering going back there, actually.

I'll be doing some guided meditation tomorrow with a friend and I did indeed have a listen to some of the Gnostic meditation workshops that you suggested. Most of it is pretty intuitive, and if you've read enough of Samael Aun Weor, you would already know 50%+ of the theory behind internal meditation. The hard part is just to knuckle down and practice! My little brother meditates for an hour per day; you would not believe how he's changed for the better over the past few years. He used to be a chubby, pot-smoking slug, and now he is a happy, vibrant chap who is touring southern and eastern Europe and planning to go to university next year.

I was just thinking on your situation. PMO puts a dent in your spiritual program, for sure, but 14 days is good progress and you can basically pick yourself up and pretend nothing ever happened. How are your practices going? Still doing the Christic Egyptian Pranayama?

@J Scott No, my focus now is self-observation and expanding my awareness. I also listen to binaural beats to help get me into to state when the pressure is on.

I'm currently finishing my masters and need to have it done by the end of the month so I have taken a toll. I've grown a bit of a pot belly, have become a caffeine, nicotine (shisha/hubby-bubbly) and sugar addict and I think I've been in denial about it. I have finally decided to face myself despite the pain of doing so, but it's the only way.

So I intend to revive my practices this week and start walking the path again. It will be tough but my soul will have it no other way. I must manifest my highest potential... I will be doing 1) concentration meditation 2) pranayama and some practices for mastering the sexual energy taught by David Deida. I'll let you know how it goes buddy!

  9. Yes, to be more practical, I'd say that when you feel lust, focus your attention to your body. Feel the clothes on your back, breathe into your belly, and almost be in meditation where you're very aware of your body

I believe that in this case it could refer to being superior to one's former, porn-addicted self. To quote Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra:

"You have evolved from worm to man, but much within you is still worm. Once you were apes, yet even now man is more of an ape than any of the apes...
"Behold, I bring you the Superman! The Superman is the meaning of the earth. Let your will say: The Superman shall be the meaning of the earth!"
    (Prologue, section 3)

@L Coroneos Well said! Nietzsche's Superman is an inspiring archetype of the latent potential that lies within all of us indeed. This is what all this is about, we're all here because a part of us knows that we are more than our current form suggests. Power!

Nice quote! Still though I don't really like Nietzsche with all his "god is dead" stuff

Yeah I know, personally I disagree with that. It's probably the most misunderstood quote in all of modern philosophy. I have stated quite clearly on my website, "Nietzsche was mad to say that God is dead, for 'in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).'"

Did any of you know that St. Paul actually quotes a Greek philosopher in saying that?

They fashioned a tomb for you, holy and high one,
Cretans, always liars, evil beasts, idle bellies. [See The Epistle to Titus for this quote's appearance in the NT]
But you are not dead: you live and abide forever,
For in you we live and move and have our being.
    - Epimenides' Cretica (Κρητικά)

Paul was very well-educated and as such was highly qualified to come to the Greeks at the right places at the right times, precisely when they were all wondering what this "Jesus" business was about. Samael Aun Weor says that Jesus was a Super-man, and refers to him as Jesus-Dionysus-Zeus-Jupiter, if I'm not mistaken, equating him therefore with the older gods of the Greek and Roman pantheons.

    Just FYI :D

This is very inspirational. That´s similar to what I´m doing now when urges come up. I will take deep breaths and then the urges will disappear and of course I feel much better.
It´s interesting to see how Deida recommends us to handle sexual energy. Not just for the biological act of reproduction but also into the force of inspiration.
