I've been a member of NoFap for about 1 month now. Despite this short period of membership, I am no novice; I have been reading through forums here for about eight months. In reading through these forums, I have found that an interestingly high proportion of Fapstronauts who make it 30+ days mention experiencing a period of anger early on in their streak. I, too, experienced a phase of anger early on in my 5 month streak and also at the beginning of my most recent streak.

I wonder why an anger phase affects so many people. Could it be the brain coping with dopamine reduction? The testosterone spike that occurs after a few days of not losing semen? Emotions cycling through?

I am greatly interested in hearing your theories as to why an anger phase takes place. Feel free to be as scientific and detailed as you want.

Frankly I have no idea the specifics of why this happens, but I also have experienced it and am currently experiencing it. My mother asked me a simple question and for practically no reason I nearly took her head off, and I immediately expressed my apologies to her for my reaction. It’s similar to what I’ve read from other forms of withdrawal including cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, some opiates, etc. People who go through these also tend to experience mood swings that usually present themselves in increased aggressiveness and unprovoked anger. I believe that dopamine withdrawal yields similar symptoms...

  3. This definitely has to do with elevated cortisol/epinephrine levels. A brain that is stressed will signal the adrenal glands to release these hormones into the blood stream. In case of addiction withdrawal this can be so profound that a variety of very uncomfortable symptoms can occur.

There's just so much going on during withdrawal that you can't just name one process, but rest assured that a lot of it boils down to stress and these two hormones. To make matters even worse, cortisol affects different types of normal processes in the body. It jacks up blood sugar content, slows digestion, etc. to keep you on your toes. This intense type of stress translates itself into symptoms of anger, anxiety, depression...

Did you know that dopamine is actually a precursor of (nor)adrenaline? It's actually a very excitatory neurochemical. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what can happen to a body in withdrawal from dopamine/excitement addiction. It will release adrenaline to compensate. And you will feel like cr*p because of it
