A Very Good Analogy for Suicide

Discussion in 'Loneliness' started by Matrix Intel, Jun 17, 2017.

  1. "The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling." - Joeyoungcomedy on Reddit

I'm stuck on the 100th floor again and feel the flames and heat creeping up on me.

Yes, of course, but that's not the point. When I was about to lock myself in the bathroom and end my life because of depression, obsessive thoughts, emotional traumas, paranoia, and so on, I chose not to do that. Even when my mind told me that I would live that way forever. Even when I couldn't imagine a happy life for myself.

The point is that I was not the only person going through that. Many people have gone through bad things and even worse things than me and have overcome, and have continued to live. The world is full of depressed, traumatized people, and yet they chose to live, they chose to try. If they can do that, I can too.

I'm young, but I've already learned some things in this life. One is: Never trust a depressed brain.

Life is short as it is. Why die before your time?

  5. I'm ok now. Man does meditation work wonders.

  6. No, no, NO! o_O I do not accept that throwing yourself out of a burning building is a good analogy of suicide. And I speak from personal experience. There is more than one state of mind that induces suicide attempts. Here are some examples:

Yes, some people suffer dreadfully from clinical depression (of one kind or another). This appalling mental disorder may be summarised as the conviction that nothing is going to ease your pain (hopelessness) and there is nothing you can do to help yourself (hopelessness). :( The choice to die, is the only apparent means of ending the intense mental distress. :(

There are variations of the example I have given above. For example, "The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person", may choose suicide because they regard it as the best thing they can do for their family and others they leave behind. In their distorted thinking, they are convinced that their loved ones would be better off without them. In other cases, an individual may regard their actions as unforgivable. In a sense, they seek to 'execute' themselves to restore justice. :(

There are those that kill themselves because they wish to avoid the ravages of an advancing terminal physical disease.
It gives them some control over their death. In that respect, it may fit more closely to the analogy you posit than other scenarios. Yet, they wish to die with dignity, not by hurling themselves from a window in a burning, high rise building.

  7. Well earlier, my case was definitely the high rise building. Sure, there are many different reasons and motives for suicide, but I strongly believe that the analogy fits very well for most cases. The torment of life can be much worse than the death itself, at least that's what it seems to the person. The flames have cooled though.

  8. Of course you can't LITERALLY compare a suicide to those in a burning high rise building, like 9/11, because one is physical fire and the other is emotional, mental fire. The latter is far easier to fix and extinguish. Is this where you're getting at? I just don't see why you have beef against the analogy. Also, those people were straight up MURDERED on 9/11. If you think I'm saying they committed suicide, you're mistaken. Perhaps that's your beef.

The issue is that society is pushing us to that. If we are stronger and unite we can push society down. In my country if you are a little bit above average you are isolated. In this country women prefer to make sex with homeless people, when I was unemployed women literary jumped on me, now if have a wonderful job and the envy is so great that they give me a silent threat when they see how well I'm. At the country level there is an paradoxical situation never seen in the world, the party at power is throwing his own prime minister after only 6 months for no reason at all.

  12. It's amazing how different each culture is. Every single man tired of the western world highly, highly recommends traveling.

Just like to mention that this quote is from David Foster Wallace in his novel Infinite Jest. Was a good read for me.

The stuff in your OP (analogy, or maybe simile, not too sure which, for suicide).

  18. It is good to see you having a peaceful discussion about suicide. Just like with porn addiction, once you shine light on something dark, it becomes less powerful.
One thing I stress is that when you are suicidal, reach out for help. The International Association for Suicide Prevention maintains a list of suicide prevention hotlines for countries all over the world. Also, if you don’t feel up to actually talking to someone on the phone, unsuicide maintains a list of online Instant Messaging and chat suicide prevention resources.

I believe connection trumps disconnection, hope trumps hopelessness, purpose trumps purposelessness, joy trumps pain. There is always a way to find the light, even in dark places.

It might be more like imagining that your high rise is on fire. If it were really on fire, you would die whether or not you jumped. With suicide, unless you are suffering from a very advanced terminal medical condition, you will not die today unless you do it to yourself. Yes, there is mental anguish, but it is not life threatening.

  20. Right, that's why in one of my posts I told someone that you simply cannot make a literally comparison because one is actual physical fire. I'll say it again: Those that were forced to jump on 9/11 were straight up MURDERED.
