56% of Divorces Have Porn As A Factor

I read this statistic on a poster for helping with human trafficking awareness and how porn contributes to that. I am sure this isn't the first time this has been brought up, but it seemed so mind blowing to me. I went to look it up to see how true it was and found this:

"In a 2004 testimony before the United States Senate, Dr. Jill Manning shared some interesting data regarding pornography and relationships. In her research she found that 56 percent of divorce cases involved one party having an obsessive interest in pornographic websites.1 Another source, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, polled 350 divorce attorneys in 2003 where two thirds of them reported that the Internet played a significant role in the divorces, with excessive interest in online porn contributing to more than half such cases.

If these numbers are accurate, here's a very sobering statistic. Every year for the past decade there have been roughly 1 million divorces in the United States. If half of the people divorcing claim pornography as the culprit, that means there are 500,000 marriages annually that are failing due to pornography."
    This is from: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blo...n-really-destroying-500000-marriages-annually

So, that is 2004. I would imagine the number from that would only increase with everyone now having access to porn via phones all the time. It just seems so high.

So sad how much damage P can do to us, to our relationships/marriages, to our families, and to our society.

Is this statistic shocking to you, too? I'm curious if it is just me or if that seems like a crazy high number. I always feel like nobody except those here can relate to what I'm going through but it seems like many could. Just nobody is talking about it openly.

I am not surprised by those stats....it's the sad reality.

You know what else blew me away: there are over 100,000 users on this forum ... there are what feels like 50-100 NEW people joining and posting in the 'New to NoFap' forum EVERY DAY!!

I try to keep up*** with all new people posting for the first time....it is a sobering reminder to me every day how much of a problem PMing is.

*** By "keep up"..I simply mean to read or skim all the new posts every day.

When I first came across those stats over a year ago I was so shocked because I didn't realize porn addiction was a thing and didn't realize how many guys did it... I know naive.

But it's very sad to think about how porn ruins so many marriages (which means families are destroyed as well in the process)

  4. Not surprised but it’s sad...very sad :(

Wow, that's horrible the effect porn is having on individuals, marriages, and society. We are definitely not alone here.

I'd be more surprised right now to hear the ratio between that and divorce cases which ended in relationship repair rather than an actual divorce. I'm curious to know how many cases which did involve porn use didn't end up getting divorced and sought counseling in the end. Vs. how many just gave up.

I'd be interested in that, too. Not sure how you'd get that statistic, but yeah.

I suspect it’s even higher as many people have no clue porn was what caused their marriage to end. I think every counselor needs to broach this in couples counseling. So many people never even consider this as an issue.
